This place says they are a no kill shelter but will put a cat down for having a uti and medicate a dog for having one. This is not a true no kill shelter.

I had to wait hours just to see a cat I was interested in. It took me 4 tries to finally adopt a cat. Customer service is horrible!
Half the cats they show on line are not there when you go visit. So sad when there are so many animals that need good homes. I think they would rather euthanize than cooperate with interested adoptions.

We're sorry that it took you so long to adopt. We do want to allow adopters to get all the information we have about a pet, and also allow them time to get to know and see if a pet will potentially work for their family. Often that can take more than an hour to get information, ask questions, and spend a little quality time. If there are several people in line, we know it can add up! We are working on staffing more folks, but as a non profit, we sometimes struggle to fill positions. Our website refreshes every half hour, so as pets are adopted they go off the site and as pets become available they pop up. We do adopt on a first come first served basis, so sometimes if you don't arrive right as we open, some of the pets will be already gone. We so thank you for coming in 4 times to adopt and hope that the kitty you adopted is a good fit. We're sure your cat appreciates the time you took to adopt!!

My child was bite by a dog on our porch. Officer came out took pictures of the bite and told us the dog(s)would be quarantined. This is absolutely false - the incident happened Wed May 8th 2024.
The dogs are still at the residence aggressive on the townhome property.
Very disappointed in the outcome of what myself and my child was told in regard's to this bite. Nothing has been done.

NHS Animal Control does quarantine pets who bite, in accordance with city law per health department regulations. If a pet is up to date on rabies vaccinations, the law allows the pet to be quarantined at home. The biting dog, in this instance, was up to date on shots. The bite was a level 2 bite--while it broke skin--it was a single action and not multiple or repeated punctures. Therefore, by law, the dog was allowed to be quarantined at home. NHS did indeed follow the protocol in the city code.

Please be aware there are several local rescues you can adopt through outside of NHS! Our recent foster to adopt (dog) experience through them was a nightmare. I’m grateful for the newest member of our family but disgusted with this “humane” society. They were not transparent about health issues, did not have him up to date on his shots and then wouldn’t give them to him when I came back at the time they told me to. Took several weeks and calls to get his medical records to our vet, and we found out there were more shots + tests they failed to render before adoption when they were finally sent over. The lack of accountability was truly astounding and the whole experience doesn’t leave me shocked they’re allegedly experiencing a mass exodus of vets and vet techs. If you’re expecting to adopt for a flat fee and get a dog that was well cared for while in their custody, I’d suggest going elsewhere. If this is the public facing behavior they’re choosing, I can only imagine what goes on behind closed doors. It breaks my heart to think of neglected dogs ending up @ NHS only to be further neglected and the burden they’re knowingly placing on well-intentioned adopters. While their puppy cart videos are adorable, the actions I’ve seen first hand from them are v far from it. Two paws down.

Mr. Z***s dogs came into NHS at the request of the police after Mr. Z*** was involved with a police call. He was then in the hospital and unavailable for contact. NHS extended the dog's stay and were in contact with two caseworkers working with Mr. Z*** but due to his undetermined length of stay and the lack of kennel space and resources we were not able to hold the dogs indefinitely. After a month, per Omaha law, they were then moved through the system. Legally, once adopted, the dogs do belong to the new owner.

They killed my family’s dog last week on 4/28/2023 & are trying to give us $***** hush money for the “mistake “ due to the “miscommunication “ he was supposed to go on a ten day bite quarantine due to a neighbor lying & saying our dog bit her when he in fact did not he jumped up playfully & scratched her accidentally , we have paperwork stating his date he was supposed to be released which was 5/8/2023 & they’re now saying there was a miscommunication of some sort and they euthanized him . The euthanization Paperwork didn’t even have a signature on it . They aren’t giving us any answers , they won’t tell us where he is , if he’s alive or not or give us his things or even how this miscommunication happened . This is taking a toll on my whole family , and this is not ok . I wonder how many “miscommunications “ they’re having and how many family pets they’re doing this to . For several months they have had 1 & 0 star reviews . They have killed one families cat , another families dog & sold somebody else’s pet to another family and probably countless other things . This is heartbreaking and sad & we want the entire city / state to know this is what the humane society is doing to peoples pets.
