    Business Response

It's unfortunate that she feels that way. I am in no way a thief or a liar. The total job cost was $10,000 not $15,000(although with the extra time and material it should have been). I told her upon accepting the bid that tile for shower and flooring wasn't included as she hadn't decided on a style and prices vary a lot on that. My wife also spent a lot of time trying to help her decide on the final design and layout of the project as well as color scheme because she was having such a difficult time deciding on what she wanted.
It was made abundantly clear that I WAS AN ELECTRICIAN AND NOT A TILE GUY, I was doing this as a favor because she was a cousin of one of my good customers. The job was originally contracted as a little work in the basement bathroom and redoing the upstairs bathroom. From the original plan she changed about every aspect of the job. In the basement she originally was going to have me fix a couple tiles and replace a vanity. That turned into redoing the entire tile face of her bathroom shower as the tiles were never properly adhered to the wall and so when trying to replace others would fall. So without charging any extra I spent the extra time and money to repair them all so it was solid. She also had me replace the panel board, insulate the wall, replace the toilet, and replace the flooring. All extra things that we didn't discuss previously. I really needed this job and since she changed some of the plans upstairs I told her if she bought the parts I would do the work and keep the price the same. After the basement was finished she loved it. She said it was so nice and that everything was perfect hence her letting me continue and remodel the upstairs. Unfortunately she had a clog in her main line from tree roots and her basement flooded several days after I had completed. I didn't know this at the time but apparently she blamed me for that even though the plumbers that came out and cleared the line scoped it and showed that it was tree roots and that nothing I did caused any issue. Even so I cleaned up that mess for her as she was going to have surgery and could get around the greatest and I just wanted to help her out.
The upstairs bathroom went from replacing the tub with a shower to leaving the tub but redoing all the plumbing and tiling the wall. Upstairs bathroom plan basically stayed the same other than that except she couldn't make up her mind on the wall and flooring tile so there were delays there while her tile came in. Please note that this entire time I had received no complaints about any of the work that I had done and to my knowledge she was super happy with everything that was done. Admittedly this project did take about a week longer than I expected and I asked if she could put a little more in it to help me get by till the job was completed. This was not an additional cost and I never charged her one dime more than what was contracted regardless of the extra time and energy I put into this project. I tried to explain that the extra time and the materials put my budget for the project behind but from the moment I asked for an advance on the final payment she was very confrontational.
A couple days before the end of the project her husband was diagnosed with covid. I told her that since I’d been there everyday that week I might as well finish as I was exposed anyway. To be honest this project had me stretched financially and I really needed to get paid and get started on my next project. The last day of the project she told me she wasn’t going to pay me the remainder. I told her that I had a family to feed and that if she didn’t pay me I wasn’t going to be able to pay my bills or feed my kids. She cursed at me and told me I was a horrible contractor and that she could care less about my kids. Never once was any of her complaints about the quality of my work. Her complaints were only about the time it took and how I was a terrible person because I needed more of a deposit. This entire time she was happy with every step of the project. When I finished the tile in her show she oohed and awed over how nice it looked. She loved the floor tile and was very happy with all the electrical upgrades. Now her story changed, on the last day. Now it was, I did a terrible job in the basement, the sewer getting clogged was my fault, I’m not a real contractor, everything looks terrible, ect.  All I needed to do was finish some grout on the tile and caulk the back splash and after this unpleasant conversation, she finally agreed to pay the remainder I went and started to finish while she went and took a nap.
Upon waking from her nap she came in very angry and said I had to redo the backsplash before she would pay me. I was in the middle of caulking the backsplash when she came in and I was really confused. She said it was crooked and I put a level on it and showed her it wasn’t that I didn’t know what she was talking about. She told me to pack my stuff and get out that she didn’t want me to finish. I begged her to let me finish. I told her I needed about 30min to finish the caulk and wipe down and seal the floor grout and then I was done. She then walked off and said so your not paying me then? She came back with my check for about $500 less than what was owed and said to get out or I’ll call the cops. I again tried to reason with her and explain that I just need to finish the caulk otherwise it was going to look terrible because I was in the middle of it and I didn’t want it to dry like that. She refused so I left. After I left she texted me about how I better not have taken any of her supplies and I responded by asking what exactly she thought was hers so that way I didn’t accidentally take something she felt entitled to but I never got a response and no I didn’t take anything that wasn’t mine. All the tile and backsplash was purchased by her and all that was left.
I did the best job I could for well under market price. The project turned out great other than not finishing the caulk and grout. I had the plumbers that were there and her own cousin told me that it looked good. Other than normal hiccups that happen with all big remodel projects nothing terrible happens on this project and It’s completely unfair to have my name and company badly mouthed in this manner. Thank you for your time in reviewing this.
