On March 8, 2024, I was going through my bills for my business taxes and noticed that I hadn't received a bill from North Hudson Sewerage Authority in a while. Being a new homeowner, I called them to check in. The company informed me that they had already sent a bill and guided me on how to log onto their webpage using the first bill I had received in November. I discovered that there was a balance due and now a penalty of $5.82. I was very distressed about the situation and informed the company that I had not received the bill. The agent said I should (i) sign up for paperless billing, (ii) pay the balance of $390.51 only and (iii) reach out to billing so they could waive the penalty. I asked whether there was a way of auto-paying but was informed that the company did not offer this. I proceed as instructed (signing up for paperless and email invoices) and also tried to register with the website but was not able to do so. To my dismay, the billing department refused to waive the fee. I requested proof that they had sent the invoice and proof that it had been delivered but the company has failed to provide these. There were no notices and the company made no effort to contact me, which means that this one invoice they allegedly sent is the only method of communication they provided. It is shocking that a company can unilaterally impose penalties on unsuspecting consumers without them even knowing that they have a bill outstanding. It is my hope that this is just a misunderstanding and not the signs of something significantly more nefarious.
