We hired Mr. R. to provide the service of a small remodeling job to our enclosed sun porch in order to make it a pleasant play room for our young daughters. The job was to install a closet, sheet rock on three walls & the ceiling, include molding around the windows, floor and doors, install a new ceiling fan & outsource an electrician to install updated lighting. A basic carpet was also going to be installed then the room would be painted. Mr. R. quoted us $6050 for this project, and assured us that it would not take longer than a few days, possibly a week depending on availability of "his" electrician, whom he implied was an employee of the company. Mr. R. collected a cash deposit from us of $3025 on April 26, 2024. He didn't begin work until May 14th. By May 15th, he had already requested another payment of $1500, which was premature as the contract stated that no further payments would be due until the job was completed. Mr. R. intimated to us that he would not be able to afford to pay his electrician unless we paid early. This happened again on 5/27 when he requested $850 then changed the requested amount to $1000 - again, indicating that he would not be able to continue if he were not paid this amount, citing this time “unexpected financial issues” over Memorial Day weekend. We provided this payment with great hesitation, this time attempting to get a confirmation of completion of work from him, but as he had previously, he told us that it would be finished by the weekend. The work that had been done to this point seemed rushed and sloppy, and his lack of ability to actually complete the work he committed to was evident. Mr. R. abandoned the project on June 11, 2024 and has refused to answer texts messages or emails. He had been working on the project and when someone arrived home, his stuff was gone. We have filed a small claims lawsuit against him and are hoping that others do not fall victim to his lack of experience and his poor character.
