I have been using this accounting firm as the power of attorney and as the executor of an estate since 2017 (previously selected by the client and elderly friend.) One year they filed taxes late and penalties and interest were charged for a tax filing in ME. ME forgave the penalty but $200+ in interest remained. This firm did not give me a credit for following years' tax filings. I did not pursue it as I knew I needed to complete the estate. In August of 2021 I called and spoke with a partner who was handling the tax filing for 2020. He didn't know if the taxes, which I brought to the office in early May of 2021 were done or if an extension had been applied for. I stated that the estate would not be paying for any penalties or fees if they missed the extension deadline. The partner assured me that they would "take care of any fees incurred."The ** taxes were e-filedfiled in September, before approval by the attorney, which required re-filing in November. Through phone conversations several months later with ** Taxation it was discovered that they processed the original filing because they never received the re-filed one, which was also e-filed. ** only accepts paper documents to process re-filed tax forms. How does an accounting firm not know this? This required me to send back the refund until the amended taxes were completed. Shortly thereafter I received a letter from ** Taxation indicating that the extension had been denied, that there were penalities and interest which needed to be paid immediately, which I did.Fast forward to December of 2022: I finally got the refunds due to the estate. They forgave the penalties but the $1,750 interest remained. I emailed the partner at the accounting firm, reminding him of our conversation and asked for a check to be written to the estate. I received a response that as far as they were concerned, the filing was complete and closed, unless ** found errors in their interest calculations.
