I hired NBC contracting to install a storm door for my rental property on June 14, 2024. I paid $375.00 for this door to be installed and I was not home when this was installed as it was a rental and no one was living there at the time. Since I was not able to be home I paid the company through Venmo of *************************** who is the owner of the company and his wife in the amount of $375.00. When I did go over to property a week later the door does not open or close it is permanently stuck shut. I went to try and unscrew the bottom piece and the s**** was not even screwed in it fell right out. I called the company and no response to my messages. Finally I sent a text with a video of the broken door and they said they were away and completely ignored me for 5 days. Finally I asked for my money back because I had to hire someone else to redo the entire door. Then the owner ************************* called me and was laughing at me saying I broke the door because it was installed a week ago. I advised him I have security cameras and no one has been at this residence at all. I told him I would like a $150.00 refund (not even the full amount) and he laughed and said sorry I couldnt catch a flight home to fix a door. I also told him I would contact my lawyer and he said good luck getting a lawyer for $375.00 and him and his wife both on speaker phone laughing at me. This is very upsetting as I work hard for my money and paying $375 to install a door that does not even open makes no sense. I want to warn others about this company. I have used many contractors and handy men and have never had an experience this bad in my life. The whole situation just feels like Ive been taken advantage of. At this point I want a full refund of my $375.00 for now paying almost $800.00 total to get a door installed properly.

    Business Response

    Date: 07/23/2024

I was contacted by ******, to install a new storm door, 40 minutes away from my location.  ****** was informed that I did not have the time to meet her deadline for the installation.  She proceeded to call back with no solution to her deadline, in a panic, and really needed someone to install the door. Since I did other work for ****** in ******* and everything went well, I thought it would be good business to accomodate her needs by changing my schedule to install the door prior to her renters arriving. The charge for the installation was originally quoted to be $400 because it was an unseen job and I didn't know about the existing conditions of the area for installation.  She asked if I could do any better on the price, so, I lowered it to $375 and said, "It could be more, depending on what I find when I get there."  She then said, "Just don't let it go over $500."  Before I got to the job, my wife had another conversation with ****** and ****** lowered her budget to $400.

On June 14, 2024, I proceeded down to the jobsite in **********, waiting for ****** and trying to reach her via phone, but she could not be reached.  After waiting for some time with no response, I left and began to head back to my area.  On my way back, I received a call from ******, stating that she forgot about our appointment.  So, I turned around and went back to the jobsite.  ****** said she was going to have her husband meet me to unlock the house since he was working nearby.  I again, waited at the jobsite for a response.  When ****** called me back, she stated that she couldn't get her husband to leave his powerwashing job in *** to meet me and she told me there was a key under the mat on the side of the house.

I was finally able to enter the house and looked for the new door to install, but it wasn't in the house as she stated.  Instead, I needed to call her again to find out where exactly it was located and essentially, it was in the shed, out back.  After locating the new storm door to install, I looked at the existing door frame and saddle of the home, where the new storm door would be installed and noted that they were rotted and should actually be replaced also.  However, as I stated earlier, ****** was in a panic and stated that not only was she trying to stay within a $400 (originally $500) budget, but also timing was a big factor for the job with her new renters.  Knowing that I could not replace the existing door frame and front wall of the house that was literally disconnected from the house for an additional $25, I resecured the existing ********* that was falling off of the existing door frame, so that I could install the new storm door.  Also, due to the existing rotted condition of the saddle, it was necessary to adjust the weatherstrip on the new storm door itself to accomodate the crooked and rotted out saddle.

Once the installation was done, the door was tested multiple times to ensure its proper operation and it worked well, as it should have.  However, the saddle and frame of the existing front door still needed to be replaced (not contracted for this).  When completed, I called ****** for payment and told her the door is operational, but the existing door frame and existing saddle really needed to be replaced, saying, "You know that shouldn't have been installed on that door frame."  Her reply was, "I know, but to replace everything, it wouldn't be done before my tenants arrive."  She then thanked me for accomodating her and said she would prefer to pay me with cash that her husband would drop off, but instead, he decided to venmo my wife at 6:21 pm that night.

It was the weekend of June 22, 2024 that ****** called, but because we were away, I didn't answer the phone.  When she sent a video of the door (which I can send, if needed), she also showed a s**** that she pulled out of the door.  I immediately texted her back and told her we were away and if she couldn't wait for me to come back, she could easily reinstall the s**** into the door.  Otherwise, I could do it upon my return.  Her response was that "the s**** didn't work and the door sticks" and proceeded to rant over the money spent, saying it was not properly installed.  I stated that it worked properly when I left the job, 8 days prior, and something must have happened for it to fall out because a s**** doesn't just fall out.  I also reiterated my conversation about the condition of the existing door frame and saddle, but she just proceeded to argue the money spent.

****** texted me Tuesday morning, three (3) days later, and wanted $150 for another contractor to look at the door.  I told her I was back from the weekend, which was only in ************, and could come down that evening for the repair.  She said, "I can't wait, I have renters moving in."  So, I then called her on speaker phone, with my wife present, and ****** did nothing but scream and curse at me with offensive language, stating, "I am a woman, you are a man.  You need to pay me!"  I had given ****** several opportunities for a repair via text and phone that would not cost her anything beyond the $375 already spent, but she chose to use someone else that apparently charged more for a "repair" of a s**** than the original job cost.  Never, at any time, did myself or my wife disrespect ****** by laughing at her, telling her she couldn't find a lawyer for $375 or that we couldn't get a flight back - we were in ************ for an extended weekend.  I did everything in my power to accomodate ****** from start to finish.  EIGHT DAYS after the installation of the new storm door, that worked properly when installed, was the first report of anything wrong, which was promptly addressed.  She also texted to tell me that neither myself, nor my wife, should ever contact her again or step foot on her property.  She has also gone to the extent of bashing me on social media, about the cost of the job and saying how she was unfairly treated - total slander, which is unwarranted.  I have NEVER had an issue with a customer, in the nineteen years that I have been in business and if something was wrong, it was promptly addressed, just as it was with ******, someone I'd never met or spoken to outside of text or phone conversations.

The cost of the job that was performed correctly was an issue for ****** from the start, but she willingly paid it because she needed the job done asap.  I do not feel that a refund is in order as I held up to my end of the agreement.  Had ****** or someone else been there to see the door functioned well upon installation and testing, she would have seen it working properly, but she was always too busy to meet.  I have done everything, over and above, even repairing an existing situation on her home to make the door work.  To refund ****** $375 for my hard work, is totally unreasonable and will not be fulfilled.

I do have several text messages corresponding with ****** that I can forward over, if needed.  We also had several phone conversations as to the status of the existing conditions that she acknowledged and also didn't dispute acknowledging in text.  I hope this clarifies the bogus complaint received by ******, but if you need any further information, please feel free to contact me.

    Thank you,

I am rejecting this response because:

the job was not done properly and I have to pay someone $375 to replace the door.(All on security cameras to prove this) . I have no idea why this business owner made up an entire fake story. The door was in front of the door for his convenience and he never waited for me or left the home or went into my shed? I dont think he realizes it is 2024 and I have security camera footage of the entire time he was at my home. His elaborate story is unnecessary and proves the type of person he is and the type of business he runs. The fabricated story is irrelevant and bottom line is I have never written to the Better Business Burea and I have worked with a ton of contractors, electricians, plumbers, builders, and handymen. The fact that I would do all of this for $375 shows you I have been taken advantage of. Thank you BBB for helping me the consumer navigate this difficult and unfair situation. I am happy to know you will display this when someone googles this company and this will be permanent for them. I hope this helps other innocent consumers avoid being scammed. As for next steps I reached out to small claims courts. Thank you so much Better Business Burea for all of your help and for standing behind honest hard working individuals.

    Regards,
