After making a phone call i requested in October to have tank disconnected and be removed for a contractor to do work in late December. However the contractor had to call a company to safely disconnect the tank so he could do his work costed me extra money. Now its almost march and this tank is still sitting in my yard. After 6 phone calls there is always a truck nearby to come pick it up it is still sitting here. I would like them to come get their large heavy cylinder of gas out of my yard.

I am rejecting this response because:

Hello this is in response to your email. I was unable to respond due to medical reasons however they did what they said it rt after I mad this comment on their business that they finally came and got the tank off of my property which made me happy however when they sent back a check for the reimbursement of propane the numbers do not add up and they refuse to contact me about this issue.

We removed this customer's ******************** tank and he was credited for 50 gallons at the price he paid for it, which gave him the $180.85 credit. Subtract off the Restock fee of $1.00 per gallon ($50.00) plus $3.00 state sales tax, plus TSF $10.79, the total deduction was $63.79 leaving a refund of $117.06. These are our standard removal fees for any tank with propane still remaining.  Customers can always use up the propane prior to having it removed to save these fees.

I had contacted Suburban Propane on December 21st 2022 about scheduling to have a tank set at my house. The lady I spoke with was *****************************. ********************* sent me a email on the same day in which it stated the Tank is scheduled to be set on Jan. 26th 2023. Will need to pay amount of $205.00 installation fee that day. The account would be set on a Budget plan for $125.00 with the 1st payment being due March 15th 2023. Fast forward to Jan. 26th 2023 which was a Thursday. I work full time, and I requested this day off so I could be there to make sure where the tank would be placed. My time and pay check is just as valuable as this company that Lied to me and my wife that we would have a tank set. No phone call or anything prior to this day that they wouldn't be able to come and set the tank. I called them on Jan. 26th 2023 same day and got a run around. Seemed like I was no longer a priority. ********************* acted like she didn't want to listen to what I had to say and put me in to talk with a gentleman. When he came on the phone line it was oh I don't know what happened the person that schedules has been off a week proceeded to say that my name had been shuffled around just not sure what happened. Then had the nerve to ask if I wanted to reschedule . Absolutely not first you treat me disrespectfully and two lie to my face, not a very business like decision to treat someone. I want to make it known No Money was gave to this Business. I'm seeking my wages that I lost from work on this day Jan. 26th 2023. It's their fault I lost out wages on this day because I thought when someone tells you and even sends a email to you this was their golden word that the tank would be set. And there employees would be here to see the job through. Instead no tank and no pay. Hope you can help me to have a resolution on this matter. Thank you.

We purchased a home without realizing the propane tank wasn't owned until after we signed everything. Never having used propane to heat a home it was an unknown area. The first bill left on our door k*** was under the previous owners name, when we finally and regrettably signed a contract they told us wait for the bill. When we got the bill they let us know we were late and ineligible for a payment plan. After countless painful phone calls we were able to pay it off overtime. First actual fill happened without notice and without us knowing the price per gal. It went up over $4/gal in 2 mo. a bill of $1905.80! This is a mortgage payment not a utility bill. Their excuse was their safety and staff is at a higher level than others. This couldn't be a more false statement when we were charged and "installation fee" but was told this was for an inspection. So we ask is this an annual thing? NO one time - that is not for safety at all just a quick cash grab. My husband called to ask for a payment plan and spoke to ***, she just kept repeating herself in a condescending tone no matter what my husband asked to the point where he had an anxiety attack after getting off the call. It started with you need a zero balance for a payment plan.. No one informed us a delivery was being made or how much they were charging. We are not auto delivery customers this feels very illegal to me. By the ***** of God we were able to pay them off. Now I call to ask about buying the tank, I'm told they don't sell tanks they only rent them. I happen to reach *** as well, I filled her in on our situation and what happened to my husband after speaking with her. She tells me my husband shouldn't be calling if he has this condition. Why should calling customer service (definition alone is to serve the customer) be an experience that causes a relapse in their therapy requiring new medication and now has insomnia? We want to purchase our tank and sever ties forever with Suburban Propane.

We have a signed agreement with this customer stating we own the tank and upon termination customer is to pay for the costs to unearth the tank for Suburban to pick up.  We are not in the business of selling our tanks.  We are willing to work with the customer on pricing.  Our local manager can be reached at ************ to discuss further.

I am rejecting this response because:

Not only was my husband was given an option to purchase the tank when we were asking for a payment plan. In reading the encyclopedia of complaints on Suburban I found a complaint where you were offering to sell a tank to a customer:

I am rejecting this response because: My issue is not with the gas bill. It has been paid in full. My issue is with the tank charge. After having the tank for 20 years, you have applied a random tank charge and turned it over to collections. This should be illegal. It certainly is not a good business practice considering I am a 20 yr customer. But then again, if that customer is held captive by your tank, I guess you can, and do, whatever you want, hence my complaint to the BBB. I would like that charge to be removed from collections and erased from my bill. This is the first time in 20 yrs I have seen this charge.

We have called ******************* twice and left messages for her to call us back so we can have this resolved, with the latest time calling being this morning. We have not heard back from her either time.
$475.60 are charges for her to purchase and own the underground tank from us. We can remove the charges if she will continue to do business with us as a COD account and we remain owning the tank. The 3rd option is for us to recover the tank from her. We can offer her a reduced rate to dig the tank up if that is the direction she wishes to proceed to.  Once we speak with her we can make the determination and resolve this.
      __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Are you only in the business of selling tanks when they are old tanks? You delivered to this house without notice twice. We didn't ask you to fill our propane and we were not quoted how much it would cost I don't see how that is legal. The first time it was filled my husband stressed to NOT do that again - fill without notice or price quote. You have caused my husband to regress in treatment he's been going through for years by your business practice, and abysmal customer service agents. You caused emotional damage and stress to my entire family because what he went through was around my children. You give your agents a script where they just repeat the same line over and over again with no real solutions there. I spoke to your manager before you posted this response. He offered to lower the price, but we all know that is not permanent- If you almost drowned and were traumatized would you go back in the ocean??? This company is currently being investigated in my state for pricing and sneaky charges. You have over 350 complaints in 3 years and are NOT BBB accredited who in their right minds would trust you? We need to buy our tank at a market cost without paying for a cancelation fee. We will seek legal counsel doesn't seem hard since you're already being investigated for the things we've experienced. "You're not in the business of selling tanks" Seems to be your motto, also sounds very much like it should include "because we like to hold our customers hostage!" You make it so expensive it's impossible to get rid of you. We didn't choose to rent this tank it was already buried in the ground when we bought the house. Why do all of your competitors who are BBB accredited offer to sell their tanks? It's because they have good business practice and don't price *****.

This customer has a signed contract as well as an executed notarized Easement confirming the status of the tank lease and explicitly stating that upon termination, the customer is responsible for unearthing the tank so that we can remove it should they wish to change providers.  Customer can either continue service with ********************** or begin the termination process.

We had suburban propane come out and hook up our tank that was already with the house when we bought it and did not conduct a fill up. We went out of town for a month in Dec-Jan and came home to find a bill for $255 in our mail for a service we would have quickly declined if we were home given the price. After numerous attempts to get ahold of our local office over the course of nearly a month, I was finally able to get ahold of them and ask why we had a bill and ask why they filled up our tank without calling. They said it was because they put everyone on automatic fill up unless customers specifically specify to be put into will-call (info that was unbeknownst to us). When I asked why they do that, the local manager/supervisor said because thats how they make their money. After asking numerous times where in my contract it said we agreed to that, they said its not and thats its just something they always do. Then they said that they conduct a fill up at least once a year whether you want it or not, and regardless of tank level (can be the difference of hundreds of dollars given the amount of propane they put in the tank). I asked numerous times to see where any of this was discussed or agreed to in writing and they said its not in the contract, but just something they do. $255 is no small bill and not something they can demand people to pay on will whenever they want. Weve heard numerous horror stories of this company when we moved to TN, and seem to have unfortunately fallen prey to their predatory actions.

******************** was given the option to make 3 payments on the balance and go on Will Call, or if he has no intentions of using the gas ever, we can pick up tank and refund him for the 7.7 gallons of gas in the tank.  He can let the local manager know what option he wishes to go with.

I purchased a home in November of 2021 that included a rental propane tank, owned and installed, by Suburban Propane. The propane tank was installed years ago and was refiled with no issues until I called to have them do a leak test. Thats when I was told the location of the tank was in violation and it would have to be moved because it was too close to the hatchway, too close to the basement windows, and too close to the in-wall a/c unit. The technician then locked the tank which left us with no access to cooking for a few weeks. A technician did come back and unlocked the tank even though it was still in violation. After months of going back and forth with ***** who stated that as the new owner of the house, I would have to pay them (Suburban) to relocate the tank. that they had installed and filled for years. When I asked why the new owner would be responsible for paying them to relocate their potentially deadly installation, I was told over the phone that I had no argument because Suburban Propane had grand-fathered the installation with the previous owner, therefore, the new owners of the house will be responsible for paying to relocate the tank for even though it was Suburban Propane's error. After getting nowhere with ***** I finally got to speak to ***** the manager who stated that he would contact the local office and have them note for the record to relocate the tank to an area within code. A year later, I received a $51.00 tank rental bill but no mention of relocating the tank. Another call and a technician came on January 30, 2023, to take pictures and find an area that would be within code. The next day I received an email from *************************/Service Coordinator with an attached Quote Proposal and Site Plan relocation of the existing tank where they are AGAIN trying to charge me for their error. Account #****-195405 Quote # Q25117 Amount due: $736.52 to be paid by me. Very disappointed in this company that they won't resolve an issue they created.

Account #:*********** Date: Jan 27, 2023 I have been a direct suburban propane customer for the last 6+ years. Our residence has had the Suburban propane tank since 2008. Its an old 15+ year tank. Considering we are a free market economy, I want to have the flexibility to have good rates. Therefore, I shared with Suburban Propane that we are getting rates that are significantly lower than what was being offered by Suburban Propane. Suburban Propane stated that there is a gas shortage and therefore need to charge higher rates. Therefore, I checked with other vendors in the area. No other vendor in my area are complaining of a gas shortage. Therefore, I went back to Suburban propane asking for a better rate and they flatly refused to entertain any rate requests. I understand. So I asked that I be allowed to purchase the Suburban Propane tank. They said company policy does not allow to sell the tank. Suburban is holding customers hostage to a leased tank. I have seen examples in other BBB complaints where Suburban is willing to sell the tank and therefore Suburban associates statement to me is false that they cannot sell the old 15+ year tank. I am not able to make any PROGRESS with the customer facing associates at **********************. Therefore, the answer is simple. I hope Executives at Suburban propane will read this complaint and promptly address with the action I proposed. I want to purchase the 15+ year old tank from Suburban Propane with an agreement of sale and I should have the right to purchase this old tank at the current market rate for an old used tank. Every complaint in all the posts demonstrate that Suburban Propane is not treating customers as customers and engaging in fear mongering tactics such as shortage of gas. Appalling customer service. In summary, I want ********************** to contact me back so I can purchase this old 15+ year tank.Thank You!

This customer called unhappy with his current price per gallon. There were discussions explaining our value and service over just price per gallon and that fact that he can be confident that we will always be available to him 24/7 365 & that fuel shortage is something he would not need to worry about with us at Suburban.  He has never had an issue with our service nor has he ever run out of gas.  We informed him we do not sell our tanks for depreciated costs. We did offer a free site evaluation to come out and visit the property to supply him with a quote to have the ** tank removed (confirmed we would not cover the cost to remove the tank for him) and he agreed to the site evaluation but did not want to be home while we did it.Site evaluation was done on 1/25/2023 and the quote to pump out tank and remove it was sent to his email 1/28/23. We have not heard from the customer since the quote was emailed to him.  Please also note we have a signed customer service agreement and signed underground tank agreement.

I am rejecting this response because: You have not addressed my concerns. Read my complaint please.
      1. You have previously sold the tank to other customers and now you are holding me hostage by not selling the tank. Why not selling the tank? Saying its policy is holding customers hostage

      2. Your price is  at Least >75% higher than the market price

      3. I did not sign the original contract to put your tank in. Unfortunately, I had to sign the contract since I bought the house from the prior owner who put your tank in

      4. I also did not receive any emailed quote from you to take the tank out

We have sold UG tanks to customers if they opted to purchase at the time of install or if the situation deemed necessary. Customer deciding after 7 years that he must buy the tank now does not qualify as necessary. As to price, Customers current locked in development pricing is at $2.29 per gallon until 10/31/2023, which is lower than the ********************* rate which was at $2.916 per gallon. Also, at the time of his most recent delivery (1/12/23), 3rd party stats (independent statistic & analysis U.S. ********************************** propane pricing for the central Atlantic region was averaging $3.245 on 1/12/23, again customer is at $2.29 per gallon and that national average doesn't account for delivery prices.  Customer absolutely signed the leased customer service agreement and underground tank agreement. Quote was emailed 1/28/2023, but we will gladly send that again today.

I've been waiting nearly 2 weeks for a propane delivery in the winter. Anyone can imagine the severity of the problem. Suburban documented in their own records that delivery was made the day after I placed my order, but no delivery was actually made. The rescheduled delivery (a week later) was cancelled due to "snow on the road" on a road that ***** Civics are driving regularly. The previous company, bought out by Suburban, made reliable deliveries in ACTUAL inclement weather. I've never had such a dangerously poor business relationship with any other company in **********. Keep in mind that this is a vital utility. DON'T go with this company for your heating needs as you will be risking frigid nights and frozen pipes. I am already in contact with the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General, and am exploring my options to switch to another company. **Be warned.**

I have been trying to get my refund from Suburban Propane since August 2022. I have spoken to 2 different customer service reps with both stating I will get my refund. The 1st one stating it could take a couple of months with the check having to come from headquarters, so I waited longer than that and still no refund. The 2nd rep., I went through the whole explanation process again. i was told she would have to research and I would receive my refund. This has been another 2 months. Still no refund.. The Suburban Propane Company, I dealt with since 2015 began a contract program a few years back, where they estimated your yearly usage, charged you a set price, meaning you paid that price for a yr. regardless if gas prices went up or down. You were, also, allotted a certain number of gallons on the contract for that year. I paid that monthly price for 2021-2022 contract year. I finished my yearly obligations, making all my monthly payments. In February, my 30 year old furnace began giving me more problems than it was already doing on a yearly bases, so I decided to replace it with a more efficient heat pump. Therefore, I did't need gas any more. Therefore, I did not use up my allotted number of gallons, of contractual, gas. I called Suburban Propane when all this happened to inform them of my situation, thinking I was being helpful, and to request no more gas deliveries, and was informed by a very rude costumer service rep. that I was required to fulfill my contract or I would be in big trouble. Therefore, I fulfilled my contract paying the full dollar amount the contract stated. I started receiving a billing statement dated 7/20/2022, stating I have a $167.62 credit, which is my over payment of the number of contractual gallons of gas I "actually" received. I received another billing in August stating the same thing and I called the company requesting the refund on Aug. 30, 2022. And as stated above I am still getting the same statement monthly, but no refund as of yet. I feel like I am getting the run around and will not get my refund since this has been going on for 6 months now. I am not getting very good customer service and thought maybe you could get a better response than I have for the past 6 months.

I am rejecting this response because:
I have been told this same thing twice before by 2 different costumer service representatives and have not received a refund yet.  When I receive a refund, I will accept the response at that time only..

      Regards,

Surburban Propane charges customers on ************* more than the cost of propane. Currently the cost of propane is $2.696 per gallon. According to Surburban propane, they say that they have to use a "whole ferry to themselves" which is not true, that is a fundamental lie - as not only have I seen this truck on a ferry with cars, but you also cannot reserve a WSDOT ferry for a single vehicle, so they instead charge island residents who do not have many other options $6.99 per gallon. It is an outrage and un-ethical business practices.

Our local customer service center manager has reached out to the customer 3 times since Thursday 1/19/23 to discuss any concerns that they may have and have not received a call back yet.
The area that this customer lives in is on an island that can only be accessed by ferry. As such, the cost of doing business on the island is higher than the other areas that we service due to how remote of an area that it is.  All of the customers on the island are charged the same price per gallon for propane and are priced correctly.

*** ********************************* ******** Propane Prices from 12/5/22 to 1/9/23: Residential Propane: ~$ **** per gallon Wholesale Propane: lowest $.89 (12/12/22) and highest $1.03 (1/2/23) Suburban Propane filled tank at $3.29 gallon on 1/11/23. Invoice for ***** gallon fill was at $839.86. The price gouging is one issue of concern. However, the company has not offered nor is a price cap program /agreement mentioned on website. If suburban propane offers such a program, its is not advertised on the website. While the price of propane fluctuates, the average weekly cost reported by the U.S. ********************************* speaks for itself. $1 more than weekly cost is an unacceptable business practice. This is a public utility company that takes advantage of an unregulated market at the expense of consumers. Price gouging by a public utility company does not benefit anyone.

Our local customer service center manager spoke with our customer and explained his price and discussed the different programs we offer to help customers with payments.  As a courtesy we lowered his last fill rate and would honor this price for the next fill.  Customer will contact us in the spring to get on a pricing program for next heating season.
