Called Vogue about a subscription I never signed up for. I was sent to National Publishers Exchange and then was sent to Western Reader's Services where I got the voice mail of their manager, Ed. Basically, it's a scam to use your information to send magazines you never signed up for, and probably intimidate you into paying for later. It's pretty scummy. I wish someone cared enough to make it illegal for companies to do this.

Hello. I apologize for the trouble this has caused. Usually, these promotional subscriptions are sent to former subscribers to reintroduce them to the magazine, but in the course of having the addressess verified by the post office sometimes the incorrect name and/or address is matched up. In any event, there was no billing and the subscription has been canceled with all information (name and address) deleted. You may receive one more issue should it have already been mailed prior to cancellation, if so, please disregard. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and trust that should not happen again. Regards, and sincerely, Ed (customer service, Western Readers Service).

This company works with the National Publisher's Exchange, Think Direct Marketing, and Western Reader's Services Group. They send magazines direct to consumers. The consumer never ordered the magazine and most likely had no idea that their data was being stored by these companies. Then, the companies send a scary-looking bill to the consumer. Apparently, many consumers pay the bill because they fear retaliation. Or, the consumer tries to cancel the subscription by going to the magazine. The magazine informs them that it's another company placing the order... who says it's another company placing the order... etc. I've been following these breadcrumbs to get my data removed and my subscription canceled. It's a nightmare. This can't be legal?!
