    Business Response

    Date: 05/03/2024

We acknowledge the fact that we came to the tough, but mutual decision with the parent, to end care for this child and that is not something we do without careful consideration. However, we want to be clear that we did not end care due to the child displaying a lack of communication or because we were unwilling to use a communication device. We had previously been using sign language with him and was asked by a therapist to switch to a communication board. Our teacher began using the communication board even though the child would not respond to it. A few weeks later the same therapist asked us to switch to an *pad. We were willing to, and contacted mom with some logistical questions about using the device in the classroom. We never got a response back from mom. Even still, we continued to use the tools and suggestions the therapists recommended and were always happy to try new ideas. Unfortunately, many of the suggestions that we tried did not alleviate the child’s frustration of being in a childcare setting where he had difficulty communicating his needs to the teachers and other children in the room. Due to his frustration, he would often run out of the room, causing a teacher to have to chase after him and bring him back. Often one teacher had to spend 1:1 time for extended periods of time making sure he did not try to leave the classroom. This situation put the child and other children at a safety risk because the entire classroom could not be adequately supervised with one teacher needing to provide constant 1:1 care. We communicated this with mom, and she agreed that we were not the right fit. She notified us back in February that her child had been evaluated and qualified for a specialized center that was equipped and funded to handle children who need more individualized care but was waiting on information about available spots. We all agreed it would be a safer place for this child. We had done our best during that time to keep the child as comfortable and safe as possible while continuing to try any strategies the therapists suggested. We have spent 14 years providing care to all children with all different needs including children with autism, speech disorders, seizure disorders and behavioral challenges. We have spent many hours helping families get testing, so their child has access to therapists. We have always provided a warm and welcoming environment for therapists who need to visit children in our care. We even offered to help this mom get supplemental income if she had to take time off work to care for her child while awaiting a space to open elsewhere. However, we do acknowledge that sometimes a child needs a more specialized setting to be safe and happy. That is what happened in this case. We tried to be the right fit for the child for over a year. We do not discriminate towards any family or child, and we were disappointed that we were not the right fit for the circumstances. We wish this family well and the child will certainly be missed.
