On 7/31 my corgi got kicked by my cow. On 8/1 he was not putting any weight on his left hind leg. I called the vet office & scheduled an appointment for 8/2 at 940 am. At this appointment my corgi was examined and had an Xray done of his leg. The Xray showed a fracture. They told me he would need surgery. They called a surgeon in Ithaca. The surgeon told the vet that it would be $5-7k for the procedure. I dont have that kinda money lying around. They gave the surgeons info to call & schedule. They sent my 8 month old corgi home with 2 wks of pain meds. At this point I needed to get a better price and figure out how to come up that lump sum in a short time so my pup would not suffer long term damage as vets dont do payment plans and a CC isnt an option for me, as I told the vet 3 times. I took my pup out to my vechile (work van) that had a very plush 3" gel memory foam bed made for his comfort. The time was 11:30 am when we left the vet. I was in there parking lot for almost an hour calling friends, family & even trying to get approved for a CC to pay this astronomical vet bill. With no luck I proceed to go to work. My pup with me like normal. I got him nuggets so he could take his pain meds. I got to my job at 2:20 pm, at 2:33 pm the state police called me. They were at my house looking for me & my puppy! That means the vet called the cops right after I walked out their door! They gave no time for me to figure stuff out all because I told them I didnt have the money up front to pay for the procedure. The cops wanted to take my pup! That is absolutely ridiculous! I was given no time to apply for grants, loans, ask friends/family member or to check my retirement to see if I could tap that. They called just called the cops while I was in their parking lot trying to find a solution. Now I have to worry about the cops showing up at my home and possibly my place of work looking for my pup. The amount of extra stress & anxiety this has causing me is making physically ill.

      Business Response

      Date: 08/03/2023

      On
8/2, Below is the note for the veterinarian who examined the pet and discussed
the case with the owner.  Due to the
nature of the case, we called the Animal Cruelty hotline to request to follow
up with the owner to ensure something is done for the pet.  Instead, they called the sheriff’s department
and dispatched them instead.  We only
found out when the owner called and informed us. Radiograph- lateral of left hind displaced
fracture of the distal femur near the growth plate. Unable to get more views
due to pain. Talked to the owner about the findings. Told the owner due to the
being near a growth plate the best option for the p is Colonial stated that the
orthopedic department would not recommend splinting a femur. Referred this
information to the owner, and she got very upset and stated that was way too
much money, and from our understanding she didn't think that would be an
option. She asked again to splint, told the owner that is not the correct
option for the pet, so we are not going to pursue that for him. Told the owner
that we can send home pain control, but we need to decide soon to fix this for
him due to being two days old already. The owner questioned why two pain
medications, told her that the pet is very uncomfortable, and the gabapentin
would help with resting as well because it may cause mild sedation. Then owner
proceeded to ask how much everything was, she did except the pain control. We
also gave her the information for Colonial. Told the owner if she finds another
option and needs help with referral we can help with this, but this pet needs
this fixed, or consider amputation (O was extremely upset with the thought or
recommendation of this, colonial did say this would be about the same cost for
the surgery), told owner there are rescues that may help financially out there,
some people need to consider surrendering (owner again upset over this
recommendation). Tried to explain to the owner that I am not trying to upset
her I am trying to offer all options as solutions for *****. Told owner to let
us know what she is planning to do, we want to make sure the p is getting taken
care of. Owner went checked out and then went to her
vehicle and was in the parking lot for a while and then came and asked for the
radiograph, we provided a copy of the radiograph. We
will not refund the cost of examining the pet, radiograph and medication that
the owner agreed for us to perform.  The
medical services are the responsibility of the owner and cannot be placed to any
others.Additional notes and records can be provided upon request.

      Customer Answer

      Date: 08/07/2023

On 8/4, I reached out to Dansville animal hospital in reguards to specfic breed (corgi) questions and amputation of the hind leg to help educate me more so i could make the best decsion for *****. A male anwsered the phone after being on hold for 5 mins. He said he wanted to help answer my questions but kept wanting to address my BBB complaint. Well thanks to them I now have a time line to have plan of action, due to their call that lead to the police coming out to my home. I started to restate my question which was the following:'Since Corgies are already prone to hip & back issues, if *****s leg is amputated, how will this effect his hips moving forward.' He kept cutting me off and talking to me about my complaint. I informed him I had no interest at this time discussing my complaint and wanted to focus on getting ***** the best help possible for him. I further then stated if he wasn't going to help me find the best course of action for ***** and only wanted to discuss my BBB complaint, then we were done talking. He refused to anwser my question then focused on my statement of us being done talking if he wasn't going to help me. Please see if they recorded the conversation. If they did please request it. After we discussed *****, then I would have been willing to discuss my complaint. Just because I did not have the $5-7000 in hand did not mean I was not going to get ***** help. Because they refused to help me due to my complaint, I found a vet who would. Then found a surgeon that looked ***** over more throughly & clearly knew what he was looking at. We discussed both options & which was best.  Then we discussed possible issues & special needs ***** would have  with each option for him. DAH refused to help ***** over my complaint.  They put being petty over helping and animal.
