      I had an appointment this morning, 2/3/23, for a consult at their Fayetteville office, where they had told me over the phone it would be $95 billed to my insurance if they decided not to do a root canal and $283 out-of-pocket if they did. Seemed fair. I arrived for my appointment and, after an X-ray, was told that a root canal probably wouldn't work for my situation but that they wanted to do a 3D scan "just to be sure." I agreed, believing this was part of the consultation. No mention of an additional charge was made. After the scan confirmed the dentist's first opinion that a root canal would be ineffective, I was shocked to find out at the desk that I suddenly owed $265 for the scan, witch was also not covered by insurance. Conveniently, this was almost as much as they'd quoted me for actually getting the work done. If you're going to recommend a procedure that you know insurance doesn't cover, you should really mention that instead of surprising your patient with an unannounced fee on his way out the door. It certainly appears that they knew how much I had been prepared to spend and resided to get it from me, one way or the other.
