This complaint relates to their monthly subscription renewal practices. On June 13, 3 calendar days before the monthly renewal date I used the website to downgrade from their all access $59-a-month offering to $0 basic, as I saw little to no benefit on a weekly basis during the first month I paid for.I got an email confirmation same day that the downgrade was processed successfully, 3 days later, the company forced a credit card charge on me and without my permission re-upgraded me to full access one more time. I sent two emails, but I have yet to see a response even if it's just an acknowledgment that they're looking into it.Initial Complaint

I am filing a complaint against ExecThread for what I believe to be deceptive marketing practices and an unethical refusal to refund a charge made under misleading ******** April 2025, I signed up for a trial subscription with ExecThread, which was marketed as a monthly subscription that could be cancelled any time in the future billing. I canceled my subscription on May 6, 2025, 28 days after I signed up originally. ExecThread confirmed receipt of my cancellation. However, on May 7, 2025, I was charged $59 for a monthly subscription. When I reached out immediately to request a refund, ExecThread pointed to obscure language in their terms and conditions that defines a month period as 28 days and requires cancellation at least one day prior to that period ending. This effectively means users must cancel on day 27 of a trial described as "monthly," which is neither clear nor standard. While this may be technically compliant with their fine print, it is deceptive. The policy was not disclosed in a transparent way during sign-up and contradicts the common understanding of a monthly trial. Their refusal to refund the charge despite my timely cancellation and prompt request demonstrates a lack of fairness and flexibility. After subsequently reading additional complaints online, it seems this is not an uncommon scheme for them. Also troubling is that ExecThread targets job seekersmany of whom, like myself, are in financially vulnerable positions. Using buried terms to trap users into a paid subscription, then denying a reasonable refund request, is predatory.I am seeking a full refund of the $59 charge, which was billed for future access I do not intend to use and attempted in good faith to avoid. I also urge the BBB to review ExecThreads marketing and billing practices, which I believe mislead and take advantage of consumers.Business Response

This member initially signed up for Full Access Membership on 4/8 which transparently states in multiple places the pricing and auto-renewal every 28 days (see screenshots). The cancelation can occur anytime before the renewals occurs to stop billing for the next period. The member continues to have access to the platform for the billing cycle that was just paid for.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:I disagree with the transparency claimed by the company. I cancelled on day 28 and 1 day advance notice was buried in the fine print.
There was also no response to my request to speak with a customer service representative regarding this issue..
Finally, my request was not to have access to the platform. My request was cancellation and a refund.
Other consumers should be wary of this business and its practices.

As previously mentioned the renewal language was stated in the sign-up flow, the terms and conditions (Which are opted into) and in the purchase confirmation email. As noted in the terms, and as we transparently shared with you up-front when you originally signed-up for Full Access, the membership service and related fees are fully-earned upon activation, and auto-renew unless canceled in-advance, and are therefore non-refundable.
Please note this member also acknowledged via email that the cancelation occurred after the renewal did.

My situation mirrors many of the BBB complaints filed. I signed up for a year of the service and didn't find it particularly helpful. As such, I stopped using it months before it expired. There was no notification that service was going to renew until I received a $485 charge against my credit card. I immediately challenged this but received no response. If this is what Exec Thread is promoting as a valued and helpful business model, I suggest they rethink the value of brand and reputation. My experience and those of countless others is clear proof of at a minimum deceptive business practices.Business Response

Hello ****,
Thank you for writing in and happy to address your complaint.
You signed up for a monthly Full Access Plus ExecThread membership on 12/15/22 and then upgraded to an annual option on 6/21/23. You then were charged your annual subscription the following year as agreed upon within our terms of service.
In addition your email was responded to a day later (i.e. our team responded on 6/18/24) and is still waiting for your response.
Customer Answer
Date: 06/24/2024
Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:ExecThread ignored my requests to cancel this unwanted subscription and the BBB response erroneously states that I didn't respond to their 6/18 email.
As captured in the attached document of recent correspondence with ExecThread, my 6/18 letter clearly reiterates my intention was not to purchase this renewal of an annual subscription of their service and I requested a credit of the $485 charged to my credit card that day.
ExecThread responded on 6/19 ignoring my request for refund and stating that I needed to log onto the service to cancel, but that the cancellation would not take place until the END of my current subscription period.
I responded on 6/22/24 that I no longer maintained credentials to log on to process the cancellation as I had not used the subscription since 11/23. i
In response to the BBB complaint, ExecThread responded on 6/24/24 (today) that on 6/21/23 I had upgraded to an annual subscription and were charged a year later (now) for the renewal. They also incorrectly stated that I had not responded to their 6/19 communication (my 6/22/24 response is also included in the attached word document)
ExecThread first stated that they had no record of my 11/23 response to not continue the service. Leaving that aside, they also chose to ignore my 6/18/24 email asking for this cancellation and refund. Their email in response to the BBB inquiry verifies that my 6/21/23 "upgrade" to what I had not at the time realized was an annual subscription, was not yet expired when I sent my request for cancellation and refund on 6/18/24.
ExecThread knowingly refused to honor that documented cancellation notification, which occurred while my 6/21/23 subscription was still active. Instead, they directed me to log onto their service - a service that their records will clearly verify that I haven't used in more than 7 months (and for which I maintain no active credentials to do so) to prevent being charged AGAIN next year for another renewal in June 2025. My 6/22/24 email to them stating that I had no such access and restating my original request for refund and verified cancellation has still not been responded to.
This particular example of behavior is even beyond the clearly deceptive business practices referenced in the list of similar BBB complaints about this service and in particular the unobvious autorenew terms with no reminder in advance to customers. In this instance, they also ignored my clear statement of intent to cancel and be refunded...and instead directed me to a process that I cannot access, delaying my ability to cancel according to their process until after the 6/20/24 expiration and sneaky autorenewal of the service was in force. It's somewhat evident that ExecThread isn't interested in delivering a service to willing customers for an accepted exchange of value for fees...but rather in establishing a perpetual contract that is impossible to cancel until it's too late.
To satisfactorily and fairly address this complaint, ExecThread needs to honor my request for cancellation by both refunding the $485 billed to my charge card on 6/18/24 and verify they will prevent any future renewals of this service. It's abundantly clear I haven't benefited from most of the last 12 months of the service and my choice to not proceed for another year has been communicated equally clearly, and before the annual anniversary of my service.
A Word document of the referenced emails are in the attached document.
Sincerly,

Hi ****,
Our customer support team responded to your email in one day after it was sent on 6/18 with directions to cancel and to share an email thread that was referenced. Also, please note your renewal occurred on 5/26 and your email was sent on 6/18.
We are unable to fulfill your refund request due to the policies stated within the terms of service, to which agreed and proactively opted into when signing up. As noted in the terms, and as we transparently shared with you up-front when you originally signed-up for Full Access, the membership service and related fees are fully-earned upon activation, and auto-renew unless canceled in-advance, and are therefore non-refundable. If you share the previous email where you requested to cancel your membership before the renewal occurred that would allow our customer support team to refund you.
Best,
The ExecThread Team

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:1. Even if (as Exec Thread asserts, that I inadvertently upgraded to an annual membership in the Spring of 2023, Exec Thread is changing it's own story about the dates they say that took place.
in the BBB response posted on 6/24, Exec Thread stated my monthly membership was upgraded to an annual option on 6/21/23, then renewed a year later. I've copied that communication below:
"Hello ****,
Thank you for writing in and happy to address your complaint.
"However in this week's communication, Exec Thread changed that and now states my renewal was in May, and therefore had auto renewed before my documented request to get a refund and cancel (which was sent the day they posted the billing to my credit card).
2. Because I recalled this Spring ******************************** my last response to this forum, I asked Exec Thread to provide me a record of the Spring Transaction including the date and terms of agreement. I recalled this as extending my monthly membership to a full year membership, which would be valid until one year from my original monthly access. That original transaction was in the Fall fo 2023, either late November 2023 or December 2023. The Exec Thread response did not include these records as requested.
So Exec Thread has not substantiated the claim that I renewed for a recurring annual membership in the Spring of 2023 and they are modifying the dates they indicated this took place when I challenged through BBB.SIncerly,

This vendor has an unauthorized charge on my credit card for a membership I never used. Theyre claiming that I agreed to it as part of the free trial. Its possible that it was in the print of the agreement that no one ever reads. They seem to prey on such users that dont pay attention to the agreement and/or dont look at their credit card bills. I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:Its impossible for a customer to read the fine print and keep track of these trial memberships and remember to promptly terminate them. These types of business solely rely on customers not remembering to cancel and that makes this practice predatory. If the business were acting in good faith, they would have reached out to the customer seeking an explicit authorization for charges going forward. However, there was no authorization sought and as such, this type of practice should be illegal.

I emailed to cancel this scam of a subscription on September 10th, 2023 (All of their postings were old expired jobs anyway). Did not get a response to the email I sent (was also locked out of my online account so could not cancel online). No email or callback. Started services on 7/30 with billing cycle every 28 days. Fast forward to January 3, **** I noticed I was still being charged $59 a month. I emailed again on 1/3/24 and this time got a response 5 hours later asking for me to re-send the email I sent in September, which I had deleted (fair, I did not have the email so that part is on me). I was able to cancel online at 9:10am PST on 1/3/24 (and got the cancellation notification via email at 9:10am PST). Later that evening, I got charged ANOTHER $59 for ******** My next billing date should have been 1/4/24 anyways. This is just pathetic and the absolute WORST customer service I have ever been subjected to. This fake scam of a company has created a terrible reputation for itself as seen from the numerous other reviews stating cancellation issues. I would like to be reimbursed for the month of January $59 (I spent $413 on fake services since July). This company is a legit SCAM and needs to be shut down.Business Response

I joined and paid the annual fee for Exec Thread a year ago and used their web-based services for approximately seven months. I didn't see much value in the services they provided. They set up their accounts as automatic renewals. Without notifying me that my annual subscription was about to be renewed, they charged my credit card for $150 on 10/21/2023. Once I discovered the charge pending on my credit card account, I immediately canceled my subscription on 10/23/2023 and notified them that I no longer wanted to use their service. They responded on 10/31/2023, stating they would not refund the money because of what is said in their terms of service. This is their cancelation policy:"Cancellations: To cancel your Paid Membership, log in to your ExecThread account and visit the Settings page in your ExecThread profile (*******************************************) to cancel your subscription at least one (1) day before the end of the current billing cycle. In the event of cancellation, no refund will be provided for the duration of the current cycle, and you will continue to have access to the Paid Membership through the end of the current cycle."Any reputable business would have notified me in advance that my subscription was about to end and that they intended to automatically renew my subscription on this date with the card on file. They didn't do that. As soon as I noticed a charge pending on my credit card account, I canceled my subscription and immediately told them that I did and asked them to refund my money. Their cancellation policy puts their customer at a disadvantage. They must revise their practice and notify their customer before automatically renewing the subscription. They have $150 for services I will not use and have already canceled the account.Business Response

This member originally signed up for ExecThread as a free member on Apr 14, 2022. He then upgraded to a paid membership tier on 04/29/2022 (see attachment). When the member upgraded to the biannual Full Access Membership on 04/29/2022, it was done in a proactive manner. See screenshot of the exact upgraded page/message showing that this package auto-renews every 180 days.
Also, see email confirmation of date/time in screenshot attached as well as 1) a link to our terms that were agreed to 2) a clear statement stating that the biannual Full Access Membership will auto-renew every 180 days.
The renewal occurred on 10/21/2023 and the member first reached out to cancel on 10/23/2023. As stated in our terms and conditions that were agreed to, "All fees listed above are fully-earned upon payment, and are non-refundable".
We do understand that members may want to cancel at any point during their upgraded membership. So we offer a pause on the membership. As stated in the agreed upon terms "If you're on the Biannual or Annual Subscription plan you are permitted to pause and reactivate your Paid Membership one time per billing period. Once you reactivate your Paid Membership, the subscription will continue for the remaining duration of the pay period and will automatically renew at the initial recurring subscription fee until you cancel the Paid Membership as permitted below."
This member is able to take advantage of the ability to pause.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# ********, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:ExecThreads isn't following a best business practice. They know that many subscribers to their services fall into this trap. I don't track the date my subscription expires and fully expected ExecThreads to notify me that my subscription is about to expire and my credit card will be charged for the next billing period. They didn't do that. Why would you charge in advance for services not delivered? I cancelled my subscription immediately after noticing a pending charge on my credit card account. I don't want to use their services and do not desire to pause them. I want my money back for services never delivered.

I subscribed to this site and their subscription is auto renewing. As others have stated, they never send any communications to let you know when it's renewing and they make it very hard to figure out how to cancel on the site. The site FAQs don't even address how to cancel. I contacted them on July 6th, the day before my subscription was to renew, asking how to cancel as I couldn't find out how on the website. They didn't respond until the next day at which time my subscription auto-renewed. I asked them to refund my money since I would have canceled before the renewal if they had responded to me on the day I contacted them or if they had made it more transparent to customers how to cancel (e.g. had a FAQ that explained this; offered a "cancel subscription" link in the account section, etc.). They refused and keep referring to the Terms of Service I signed. This is extremely poor customer service and this business clearly is designed to take customers' money without concern for actual good service.Business Response

To whom this may concern,
ExecThread is an online marketplace for executives to find and share information on job opportunities. We have over ******* members. All members have the option of being a basic (free) member and receiving limited access or Premium/Full Access (paid subscription) member and receiving access to all the information on our site. Members can also receive discounts on their Full Access Membership based on their level of activity and engagement.
****************** ***** became a free ExecThread Member in 2016. He then became an annual Full Access Member on June 1, 2020 paying $111. He then let his Full Access Membership lapse due to a failed credit card payment when his annual subscription was due. During that years time, ExecThread raised their prices so the annual plan went up to $240 plus $3 service fee for any new purchases (note: if the credit card did not lapse, the customer still would have been on the original plan/price). ************** asked for his old pricing which we gave him for 1 year i.e. a $120 discount but told him that the subscription will renew at $240. ************** agreed and signed up for the newly priced annual Full Access plan.
All Full Access members proactively opt into our terms of service (****************************************) when signing-up for a recurring Full Access Membership subscription, which could be canceled at any time prior to the automatic renewal, and which also state that the fees listed are fully-earned upon payment and are non-refundable.
As clearly stated in our terms & conditions (to which ************** proactively opted-in) we do not provide refunds to Members who upgrade/subscribe, when then engaged with the upgraded service and receive information that they want at the time, and then request a refund after-the-fact. Despite our clearly established terms that were opted into, we offered to "pause" this Full Access Membership, which would allow this member to reactivate their remaining time at any point in the future.
Please let us know if you need any additional information from us to resolve this matter. Thank you.
