I am writing to report a complaint against the Tri-Lakes Home Medical Equipment store in Saranac Lake.
My Mom purchased a hospice bed with an inflatable mattress for $1,300. The hospice bed was delivered on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. Dad spent only a couple of hours in the bed before he was transported by ambulance to the ********** Medical Center. He died in the hospital 3 days later on Saturday, February 17, 2024.
Before and after the funeral, Mom, sister and brother contacted Tri-Lakes and spoke to the owner, Matt W*******, requesting a $1,000 refund for a $1,300 hospice bed that was used for less than 4 hours. Matt initially said he would need to talk to his partners about the refund. His response to Mom was no refund. Matt also said no refund to my sister and brother.
On Friday, April 26, 2024, I returned Matt’s phone call to find out if we could find middle ground on the $1,000 refund. His response was no refund.
One of my suggestions was to sanitize the bed and place a FOR SALE SIGN ($1,000 USED LESS THAN 4 HOURS) in one of the stores, Saranac Lake, Malone or Massena. A FOR SALE SIGN AND PICTURE ($1,000 USED LESS THAN 4 HOURS) could also be advertised at the other 2 stores next to the cash registers.
I asked Matt how much Tri-Lakes charged to rent a hospice bed. His response was $175 per month. If the bed was rented for 6 months, Tri-Lakes would receive $1,050, or $50 more than the $1,000 refund.
My family was distraught as my Dad’s health was deteriorating. I understand Matt did discuss the no refund policy to Mom and my sister. Exceptions can always be made. My Dad died suddenly. As stated above, Tri-Lakes' hospice bed was used for less than 4 hours.
I am disappointed that Matt was unable to find middle ground in addressing my family's refund. Any successful business thrives on referrals. Bad news travels faster.
