Glens falls national bank (now known as arrow bank) charges customers taking out loans through them an unnecessary fee. This VSI fee is essentially insurance if the customer gets in an accident and does not have auto insurance. They claim this fee is intended to keep them more competitive and all banks charge it. However their rates were 2 points higher than my local credit union (long story as to why I didn’t use them). It may be a fee banks use but highly doubt credit unions charge this fee.
It seems to be a redundant fee as auto insurance is required. While a customer may lapse on insurance, it would take very little effort (and I consider an obligation) on the insurance carrier to notify the lien holder (bank) the customer no longer has insurance. Most states require auto insurance. It seems to me there are several measures in place/ easily put in place to essentially eliminate the reason for this vsi fee. Also, if the bank feels this is a risk, that is a cost of doing business for the bank and should not be passed onto the customer. I closed my loan once I learned what this fee was (which was hidden in the fine print and explained as an origination fee by the dealer). Think twice about using arrow bank or any bank for that matter who isn’t transparent with their rates on their website.

Glen falls have a system set up to screw their customers. You set up autopay using the autopay option, but apparently that doesn’t work. So after talking to 4+ reps who don’t know anything, you finally get one who tells you “oh you have to go to ONE TIME PAYMENT and select ‘recurring’ for autopay to work.” And then they refuse to reverse any late fees for you.

      Put very tough requirements.
So I was forced to buy the insurance from another company and it is cheaper
