On Friday, March 1, 2024, I brought my 2012 ***** ****** to the Tallman’s Tire and Auto Repair facility in Herkimer, NY for a New York State inspection.

My inspection, at that time, concluded at the end of the month.

I had both rear wheel bearings replaced (cost $750.49; invoice number *****). Unfortunately, I was told the inner tie rod on the driver-front side of the vehicle couldn’t be completed due to rust issues, thus the vehicle would not pass inspection at that time.

Additionally, I asked if the back struts were good by the mechanic, while under the vehicle in the shop, and was assured by the mechanic that both back struts were in good condition.

On my way to Albany, NY for work on Friday, March 8, 2024, the rear driver strut folded in on itself, causing it to rub the tire. That friction eventually put a ring in the tire, causing it to go flat.

I had both back struts, and the rear driver tire replaced by ***** ******** **** in Herkimer, NY on Sunday, March 10, 2024. Invoice number ********. Cost $1,108.11.

Finally, my 2012 ***** ****** started shifting weird after leaving your Herkimer, NY facility on Friday, March, 1, 2024. Unlike it had ever done before. After changing the oil and oil filter myself, along with the transmission fluid, I learned both PCV valves in the front and back of the engine were clogged. It caused engine oil to leak into the air box, which made the vehicle shift weird. They needed to be replaced. Along with a new air filter.

      Damages:
      $266.97 for new 235 50ZR18 ******** ***** ***** A/S
$50 for new oil and filter
      $35 for new transmission fluid
$95 for new air filter and both PCV valves

      Total Damages: $446.97

      Business Response

Hello Mr. *******, we're sorry to learn of your concerns and unfortunate events a week after leaving our location through this platform.  Reviewing your Multipoint inspection paperwork from the day we serviced your vehicle, I see that your concern with a possible noise in the rear was documented, and the tech did make note that he inspected the complete suspension, but that there was nothing broken, loose, or a danger at that time. The tech did mark the condition of the struts in the yellow as they were original to the vehicle and should be replaced ever 50,000 miles. But not in the red due to no visual defects or broken components.  Servicing 10+ year old vehicles in Upstate NY always poses a difficult conversation when additional items go bad within a short period of time after any service is performed. Due to rust and corrosion issues vehicles take on over their lifetime with harsh winters and salt.  Vehicles 10+ years old  will typically always have visually rusted brake lines, fuel lines, coil springs, strut towers and perches, etc, but still be in 100% operational condition.  The rust and corrosion are cosmetic and could continue to provide original quality performance, but on the other hand could fail at any point due to age.  Unfortunately in your case this seems to be the issue and cause of your unfortunate failure of your rear strut.  The concerns you expressed regarding your engines PVC issues along with oil and transmission fluid related replacement were also areas the technician addressed and noted on the vehicle multipoint inspection form.  Both of these areas were marked in the green as there were no visual leaks or drivability concerns during the test drive. The work you had performed of the rear wheel bearing and front outer tie rod end replacement are mechanical/drivetrain components that are not directly related to these areas of concern.  As a company we strive to ensure every customer is treated with the upmost respect, honesty, and compassion with the vehicle issues they're experiencing.  We would like the opportunity to discuss this situation with you in person and hope to see you back at the store to address any additional questions or concerns you may have.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
I appreciate the information given, however, a new tire still had to be purchased a week after visiting your location in Herkimer, NY, thus should be refunded. And since the initial communication, I have also installed new spark plugs (attached), along with the oil and transmission change referenced. Despite this, the vehicle still shifts incorrectly (which did not occur prior the visit to Tallman's Tire in Herkimer, NY).Speaking with a Regional Director, as opposed to the staff in the current facility seems more adequate. The staff has show an inability to perform the job referenced.

      Regards,
      ******* *******
