      I am a dentist in a small agricultural town called Sodus, NY. For a few weeks last summer I was having an issue with the cat scan machine that I use for diagnostic imaging. The machine was having trouble communicating with my office network and I was unable to view images to help my patients. I asked a Patterson service tech to troubleshoot the issue to help find a solution. The tech recommended (after talking with a customer support from Sirona, the manufacturer of the machine) that I replace an adapter that that plugs into the machine and then into the network. I hesitated to buy the adapter because of the high cost and possibility it was not the issue. I attempted to use a different brand of the adapter that was less expensive that I could order online from another company. The off brand adapter failed to fix the problem. I asked my Patterson rep if I can return their part if it doesn't correct the problem. He specifically said that I could return the part if needed. My staff opens all supply boxes to take inventory as shipments arrive. The outer shipping box from Sirona with this adapter was opened like any other box. Nowhere on the box did it say that the item could not be returned if the shipping box was opened. Inside the shipping box was another box containing the adapter which was undisturbed. This box had no seal nor designation that it could not be returned if opened but none of the contents were touched nor removed. Around this time, my independent IT company installed a new router in the office, and the new router seemed to solve the issue that Patterson erroneously told me was this expensive adapter. We contacted Patterson and they sent a shipping label for the return, and we shipped the item back to them. Now, Patterson refuses to refund my account for the cost for the returned item they have (roughly $800). This dishonesty and lack of transparency happens over and over with Patterson and Doctors are no longer standing idly by.
