The New ARA Home Improvement business contracted to put a roof on my home. The date of service was Aug. 7&8 2024. After the job was done, several problems were pointed out to the contractor. Some problems were addressed, but several were dismissed by **** (the contractor). The shoddy workmanship was the main complaint. Damage was done to the house, i.e. many cedar clapboards were badly damaged and missing in some places. An inner finished wall was broken and I was not advised of it till my wife found it at bedtime.(This may have been resolved, but must be listed.) I have some doubts that the roof ridge vent was installed properly, that is for a professional to determine. The fascia board was not prepped with paint or wrapped in aluminum but left as raw wood behind the gutters that were hung in a rushed and shoddy manner. **** addressed one gutter and did a sloppy job. Another area was the soft spot they were repairing. It appears that only one layer of sheeting was used to repair the bad spot (2ft.by 3Ft.). This makes the roofing look like it has a 3/4" difference in height on an area that should be flat. ( to explain the problem, the soft spot was removed which included the 3/4" original roofing boards and new 7/16' strand board was installed and then the new shingles. The entire house was to be the same and I assume it was done. This would make the repaired area 3/4' lower than the rest of the roof. If and when I get an inspection all will be revealed. Now, how to find an inspector who knows what he is doing and can enlighten me.

I have attached pictures of the area that is in question. As you can see in the initial pictures the area was completely saturated by water and the area was completely rotted through. All of the wood in that area was removed and replaced. You could tell that part of the house had been getting water in for a long time which is what caused damage to the interior ceiling as well, as you can see in the pictures. The roof also consisted of three layers of shingles which ride up against the cedar siding and the siding underneath of the shingles were rotted . In order to properly flash the roof it had to go underneath of the rot . So a lot of the rot was cut out as necessary. There were places that rot was worse than others. We also resheeted over the entire roof . The ridgevent that is also in question is properly installed and cut back the right amount of width of 2 inches, and across the peak exactly how it is supposed to be . I believe without a doubt the roof was done above and beyond of what anyone should have expected; especially with the shape that the house and the roof were in before the new roof was put on. We replaced many rotted fascia boards as well per our contract agreement . We did not discuss any covering of the fascia boards which we would be fine doing for an additional cost. Also the gutters were put back better than they were on there in the first place for no additional cost. We really appreciate the business of *** ********, and if he would like for any work beyond the contract to be done he has my phone number . We actually have been communicating about the stock market , and I was under the assumption that he was satisfied as he should be with everything that was done .

I reached to **** on July16th, 2023 to discuss my porch/roof. They started work on Aug 6th, 2023. They still have not completed the work. **** started out promising me it would be an easy job, should be done quickly. They did some work while I was on vacation. When I got home, I noticed some areas that needed addressed. His response was" well these are tough cuts, difficult angles" and my response was" and that's why I hired a professional company for the work" He also missed facia work for the header which I told him about in the initial meeting. When he came back to do that, he had one guy working at my house all day. When I got home to check the work, there was scratches/gouge marks on the facia with large gray screws holding the facia to the wood. With these screws used, the gutters were scratched underneath as they attempted to attach the facia. I had him replace the header that was marked up. But when they replaced the facia, they still hung it with scratches/gouge marks which the colored in with a BLACK SHARPIE. Sharpie marks on the J-channel which is tan, so you can clearly see it. Corrections pointed out to **** after many text messages expressing my concern. He came over at night and said he would take care of it and mentioned he " try to make it look not so s*****" There are still gaps in the soffit, ripple marks in the facia wrapped posts. I looked over the copper roof, there are scratches all over multiple panels. Large gray screws used to attach j-channel which can be seen and looks horrible. There work was an absolute joke. Very unprofessional. Trying to reach him, he responded with " who is this, new phone?", that was on Oct 23 , i reminded him of the multiple mistakes that needed fixed. Haven't heard from him since and I honestly don't want him on my property again. His business is a disgrace and he shouldn't be allowed to scam anyone else. Its just not fair.

More pictures but the page wouldn't allow me to attach all of them !!!!!!!

To start I would like to say Mr. ******** himself, and his buddy built the front porch on his home. I would like to say that there were numerous areas of imperfection, as they were both not professional, and did not build the porch to code or get a permit for building the porch to begin with. Before taking this job I made Mr. ******** aware that there would be a lot of imperfections that I would have to work around due to the fact that the porch was not built properly or how it should normally be built. I let him know all of the soffit and fascia work would be completely custom to hide all of the imperfections in the building of the porch overhang. He wholeheartedly agreed that he was fine with that and it was exactly what he wanted me to do. The whole process was flawless from the time work was started until the time it was finished. We communicated regularly, and he was completely satisfied with the work that was being done, as you will read in the following text messages that I have attached. He said several times that it was amazing and we were doing amazing work, which we did. After the work was completed he paid for the work being completed except for 975 (which we agreed he would pay after the gutters were completed) because he was happy with everything that was done. Once the gutter was completed he made me aware of a couple areas he was concerned with cosmetically on the metal and fascia. We then came back out and replaced a couple pieces of metal and fixed areas that we could fix or make look better that may have been our fault. Most of the areas that he wanted adjusted were due to the porch being built improperly, and us trying to cover up the imperfections. We could do nothing about it . As far as the sharpie there was a black paint marker used to try to blend it some of the blemishes from cutting the metal (one side is white, one side is black on black coil stock) so on a couple seams that he wanted the white to cover we had to use a black paint marker there is no other way. From there, instead of paying the final amount that was due, it seems Mr. ******** has tried every other alternative, instead of paying for the completed work. I am happy and satisfied with everything that was done, just as he was and stated several times over that our work was amazing. I have attached pictures , and cell phone conversations. At this point if he wants to not pay me for the final $975 that is owed, he can go ahead and keep that towards his make believe unsatisfactory.

    Better Business Bureau:

He copied that response from the one I filed with the Ohio Attorney General. I’ve decided to call it even, I’ll fix all of the mistakes and horrible attempts done by his company. I just wish this site could show pictures as well of the horrendous job that was done on my home. I’m just glad this will now be on the BBB SITE, so other honest people don’t have to suffer and waste their money like I did with this poor excuse of a contractor.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

The business arranged an agreement with the consumer to refund $50.00

    Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because: The business owner lied. He said he had to order the part, but it turns out he never did. Plus, the only reason he responded was because I filed a complaint with the BBB. He said he would refund $50 if I deleted complaint with BBB first. I don't trust this business and would rather lose the $50 so every potential future customer knows what they are dealing with.
