I am a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati in the College of Medicine pursuing a Ph.D. I have encountered countless issues since enrolling here, the biggest being that my stipend has been shorted or withheld nearly every pay period in the last year. Each time, this can take weeks or months to resolve. Do not apply to a Ph.D. program within the College of Medicine if you will rely on stipend payments. This college is unorganized, and the both faculty and business office staff are often unresponsive, unhelpful, and rude. Outside of illegal payment practices, I have experienced slow replies from faculty, incorrect/missing data from data managers, and poor attitudes from many who work here. There is little individual accountability, even when faculty/staff actions (or often, inactions) actively harm student progress. I highly encourage prospective students to avoid COM graduate programs at all costs.

Rather than face dissension and productive conversation, the Graduate School's review of a student grievance was a mockery to the diverse, receptive nature this academic institution touts. Faculty would never budge to any accountability or perspective other than those shaped by their very experiences. Furthermore, their habits surrounding their clinical practice, by some, was the "right" way of delivering patient treatment. Faculty and staff would go silent when asked very direct questions. And the number of conflicting messages was a nightmare. Not holding oneself to the same standards imposed on students left me feeling betrayed, disappointed, and depressed. I don't believe any of my classes had any current reflection of minority groups and cultural competence. An occasional statistic on Native American or Latinos does not count. It has been a relief to have just graduated but I love the complete avoidance of my questions regarding 4 weeks for degree conferral. After working so hard like many classmates, participating in graduation regalia was not on my checklist. No student should ever feel so trivial that such an accomplishment become a grueling reminder that non-mainstream voice(s) and the journey for answers remain a mystery, but more than anything, a despicable representation of what higher education should NOT be.
