John K********* (owner) came to my house (2/12/23) to give an estimate for house painting. I got a formal quote from Amy (John's wife) via email (2/13). I signed the quote and sent back to Amy (2/15). Amy came to my home to collect the $2500 cash down payment, no receipt was given. I got a call from John (3/5), insisting that he look at the gutters on my home. John came to my home (3/8) to look at the gutters, while I was on vacation. I returned John's call that day and he said that new gutters were being installed. I told John to stop immediately, and he got angry. I called my father and asked him to stop by and help. My father gave his phone to the gutter foreman, who explained that my gutters had been removed, and new gutters had already been installed, and that my original gutters were damaged during demo. I told them to put things back, and they assured me I would not be liable. Got an email from Amy (3/10) with a report and recommendation. I called Amy (3/14), John took the phone, and was outraged that I didn't want to pay for gutters. I received vulgar texts from John (3/14) regarding the situation. He stated that he didn't want to complete the paint job. I messaged John to meet and refund my down payment for the paint job. I called John (3/15), and he said to meet at his home. I came to John and Amy's house (3/15). John cornered me in his living room and attempted to give me the down payment minus the proposed cost of the gutters ($1000). I told John that I wanted the full $2500 back. John got angry, as did Amy, and started shouting at me to take $1500 that he was offering. He also wanted me to sign a new contract confirming payment for the gutters. John threatened that if I didn't take the money, there would be no proof of my down payment, and that I would get nothing. John became very aggressive with myself and Amy too. In fear of my safety, I signed the paper and took $1500 from John and walked out. John did not offer a copy of the contract.
