Approximately 10 months ago in August of 2023 I delivered my engine to Alton James speed shop and was told that a full rebuild cost was $4,000 to $4,200 and I would have my engine back in 2 to 3 months. I gave him a $1,000 deposit. I called 3 months later and was told my engine hadn't even been started yet. I kept calling every month after that and was continually told that my engine wasn't started for almost 6 months. It is now June 21st 2024 I had a phone call yesterday informing me that my engine was finished and ready to be picked up. I called today and was told the final price was $4837.50 minus the $1000 deposit leaving a balance of $3837.50 When they informed me of some costs that I was not told about when I dropped it off ($300 to reinstall a couple of parts I thought were included)and that they would not work with me on the price after having not delivered my engine in a timely fashion I decided to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I don't believe I should be charged full price for something that was not delivered when I was told it would be and I should have been more informed of all costs that were not typical.

    Business Response

*** ******** brought his engine to us for a long block rebuild. We have been very busy and apologized to him whenever he called.  We were honest with him as to the status of his engine whenever he contacted us. He brought in his engine which had the following parts on it which are not part of a long block, the exhaust manifolds, rails, valve covers, timing cover, balancer, oil pan, flywheel, torque convertor, motor mounts with brackets.  We tried to help hm by not charging to remove all of these parts, which we usually do. When he dropped the engine off, he was told that would not put all of these parts back on, however we would put the valve cover. timing cover and oil pan, but at an additional charge.  The total charge was $4,837.50 which breaks down as follows-Long Block Rebuild $4,200.00, $300.to install the valve cover, timing cover and oil pan., $337.50 Sales Tax.  We feel that we charged *** ******** a fair price for all of the work performed.

    Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:
Communication at the outset was not clear. When they told me that my engine had extra parts on it I asked if I needed to take it home and finish removing them and bring them back and they said no. Every time I called and asked how long it was going to be I was always told it would only be another couple weeks and they would get started on it. If at any time they had said it will probably be at least three or four months I probably would have gone and picked up my engine and just bought a new one. I feel like they're treating me like an expert who knows everything about it when I obviously am not, they could have explained a few things I would have taken my engine home removed the extra parts and brought it back in the condition they wanted.
    Sincerely,
