Never have I ever called a business asking for assistance and been spoken to like I was when I called them. I spoke with Matthew and he told me they are only taking rent assistance applications for September. They’ve already helped with August. Being that it’s just now August I was genuinely confused and asked what do I need to do then since I need help with August. He said and I quote “ what you need to do is pay your rent for August, that’s what you need to do”! And in the most rudest way possible. I asked for a supervisor just to tell her what he said and how he said it, she said she heard him and if you know Matthew you know he didn’t mean it that way. Well I don’t know Matthew. And the way he said it was rude. And she said I wish you well. Didn’t care. I understand they couldn’t assist but that was flat out rude.

I was standing at the Reception Desk when Ana (I did not know her name until now) called asking for rent assistance. Matthew asked what month she was requesting. Matthew told her that the Rent Foundation had already paid out for August and the Foundation is taking applications for September. According to Matthew, she asked "What am I supposed to do" and Matthew replied "Pay July and August rent." According to Matthew, she made some comments that ended in calling him a "smart *** *****." and then she hung up on him.
Ana called back immediately asking to speak with his supervisor. When I got on the phone she explained what had happened and I explained that I heard his side of the conversation. I explained that he did not mean to be rude as that is not his way. I proceeded to explain the Rent Foundation process and the structure of the non-profit. I extended my apologies for her conversation with Matthew and wished her the best of luck. I honestly did not think Matthew was rude, it appeared to be more about the message given.
I feel bad that Ana felt as if she was treated rudely. Unfortunately, we find this happens when someone is in a distressing situation.
Our mission is to provide rental assistance to those who are unable to pay their rent due to illness, family tragedy, or unfortunate circumstances. We provide a leg up so people don't find themselves under eviction. 100% of our funding comes from member donations and fundraising.
