I hired Dale Boyd of Dale Boyd Construction for a simple baseboard/shoemold install. He gave me an estimate of $350 - $550. When he left for the day on day 2 he left a mess at my house along with an open box cutter blade on my floor. He came back 2 days later (I thought to finish the job) but he only came back to pick up a check. I was surprised as he had not finished the job. He then told me I owed him $871, much higher than his estimate. He started to get angry so I just paid him so he would leave my house. He lied about hours worked, he did not finish the job, and what he did finish needs to be fixed. He did not finish behind the washer and dryer, the corner in the laundry room and he damaged a section of baseboard in the den. I sent him a text asking for a refund, no response. Reached out to him again, no response. Reached out for a third time and he responded he is blocking me. I then received a call from him at midnight that night, he did not leave a message. Why would a handyman call someone that late at night? I now have to pay someone to finish the job when I already OVERPAID Dale Boyd. Dale Boyds craftsmanship gets a C+ at best so many areas need to be redone. For this reason I am requesting a full refund.

      Business Response

I find Ms. *****’s complaint both disingenuous in its accuracy and disparaging to my honesty, work ethic, and proficiency as a professional contractor. The work was quoted and agreed upon at an hourly rate, plus materials based on my initial assessment.

However, said work did included install shoe mold throughout the whole 1st floor, finishing/correcting the base corners throughout the whole 1st floor and especially finish the base/ shoe around the stairway that wasn’t done by previous contractor because “he couldn’t figure out the angles.” I was able to achieve this with ease. In fact she even complimented my work on the stairway base/ shoe mold. Estimated costs also did not include the painting of the shoe mold before installation, caulking shoe mold, painting shoe 2nd time and was not stipulated until the job had commenced. This extended both the estimated hours and the overall cost for the project.

And at no point during said work did I:
      ·         Cause any damage to her home.
      ·         Leave a “mess.”
      ·         Obfuscate the costs of said work.
      ·         Lie about hours worked.
      ·         Attempt to call her at an unacceptable hour.
      ·         Perform any work that needs to be “redone.”
      ·         Exhibit a threatening persona to coerce payment.

I do capitulate on leaving a utility knife in an empty ground-floor common area in her home (in addition to a tool belt which I collected during my last visit to Ms. *****’s home).

As previously stated, this work was done at an agreed-upon hourly rate, not completion to her specifications for said price. I feel Ms. ***** would benefit from understanding the difference between contracted prices to completion vs an hourly rate during future contractor negotiations.

I frequently acquire repeat customers and referrals for jobs much larger than this minor job for Ms. *****, which makes her complaint all the more contemptible considering my expertise and experience of 36 years in the industry. That said, I refute Ms. *****’s complaint in its entirety. I wish Ms. ***** and her future home contractors the best of luck.

      Customer Answer

      Date: 02/20/2024

I received the response from business via mail 2/14/24.

I reject the business response and here is why:

Dale Boyd stood in my kitchen and said, "the total cost will be between $350-$550, I will not screw you". His words not mine. He purchased materials he ended up not using and then proceeded to charge me for them. He did not paint the trim, he "touched up" the trim (with paint I already purchased) in some areas but did not paint nor did he caulk. I now must pay someone else to paint, caulk and finish installing in the areas he did not finish. He did not correct/finish base corners. He said that he could not remove the existing trim due to the type of caulk the prior contractor used. Documents A and B show the incomplete work behind the washer and dryer. Maybe he thought I would not see it since it was in the laundry room. I pulled out the washer and dryer and you can clearly see where he did not finish. When I showed him the corner in the laundry that was not finished, he got mad. He grabbed a wet paint brush that he left wrapped in a plastic bag in my garage (from when he was trying to touch up certain areas) and started painting the door casing. He knew that this section needed to be replaced, not painted. It was at this point I decided to just pay him so he would leave. Documents C and D are text messages from Dale Boyd in his own words saying he did not finish. His reason for not finishing was that his "spidey" senses were telling him that I was not going to pay. Documents E and F show the cashed check front and back that I wrote to Dale Boyd, his "spidey" sense must not be that good. As for his claim that he never called me at an unacceptable hour, please refer to document G. I think most people would consider 11:53 pm on a Saturday an unacceptable time to call a prior client who is not happy with services rendered.

The enclosed documents clearly prove Dale Boyd is lying. The business response has NOT resolved my complaint. If Dale Boyd would have just finished the job and completed ALL the work we discussed, I would have no problem paying over the estimated amount. What is disturbing to me is the fact that he lied about hours work, he did not finish, and he did not do the work he said he could do. He did a rush job which now looks sloppy and the only reason he gives for this is because his "spidey" senses were telling him I was not going to pay.
