David Thurner contacted me about an add to remove shed from my property on 3/12/2025. The shed was to be removed by 3/18/2025 so a new shed could be delivered to that spot. He requested 1/3 of the payment which was sent on ***** for $205 on 3/15/2025. David said he would be there on the morning of 3/16/2025. On the evening of 3/16/2025 when he did not show up I contacted him and he stated he had an employee get sick and had to cover for him. He said he would be there on 3/17/2025 and apologized but then did not show up. When contacted he had another excuse and said he would be there first thing on 03/18/2025. At this point he told me it was going to be $140 more dollars for disposal at ******. At 7:00 pm I contacted him demanding to know what was going on and my money back. I told him I would file a police report and he made an excuse about his trailer having a flat tire. He show up around 8:00pm and tore the shed down. The pile of shed is still in my yard with David refusing to remove it because I gave him a bad review on Nextdoor. He has not reimbursed me for the ****** bill and resorted to profanity when I refused to remove my very truthful review.

I have 6”H wood borders around 4 raised planting beds in my front yard. On 7/1 when David Thurner and his helper Eric were here trimming a tree, I requested a bid to remove 6 existing boards that were rotting from the raised beds and replace them with new identical boards. He bid $1200 and requested a 1/3 down payment on *****. I asked him to provide a written description of the work his bid covered. He agreed to do so. On 7/3 I sent $700 to him on ***** and requested a written receipt which he never provided. On 7/8 his worker Eric arrived and removed 6 boards and sawed 9” off another board. Thurner sent a text that evening saying he and Eric would complete the work the next day. He requested another down payment. I sent $500 on ***** and asked for a written receipt showing work has been paid in full. He failed to do so. No one showed up to work the next day. Dates were rescheduled 6 times. All were failures to show up or to contact me. On 7/17 Thurner arrived with 3”H thin white PVC landscaping borders. Our HOA rules don’t allow homeowners to make any changes to existing landscaping without written permission. I reminded him he had agreed to replace the wood borders with identical new wood boards. He got angry and said he would go to Lowes and exchange the PVC borders for pressure treated wood. He promised to leave his tools as a guarantee he would return. My neighbor heard Thurner shouting at me and came over. Meanwhile Thurner loaded his tools into his truck and left. That evening he texted an apology and said he would go to his bank the next morning and refund $600 to my checking account using *****. I agreed to the refund amount. He failed to send the money and has not responded to any of my texts since then. I have filed a ***** Police report and notified the fraud dept. of my bank. .

    Customer Answer

In answer to your email about my recently filed complaint, here is the information for the list of items you need to complete your investigation.

    1. The warranty:   There was no warranty. The work was never completed by David Thurner. I also have never hired a handyman who provided a written warranty.

    2. The contract you signed with the business:    No written contract was ever provided. David Thurner and his worker Eric inspected the area requiring work. It was a landscaping project to remove some rotten 6” high wood boards from the borders around raised plant beds in front of my house and replace them with similar pressure treated wood boards. David Thurner made a bid of $1200 to complete the project over 2 consecutive days. He said half of the money would cover materials and the remaining half would cover labor. He requested me not to reveal the terms of the bid to Eric. I asked David Thurner to put his bid in writing and describe the work that would be done. He agreed to do so. He said he only accepted ***** payments and required a 1/3 advance payment that day. I sent $500. Several days later, Eric removed 6 boards and sawed 9” off a 7th board. He said he and David were returning the next day. That evening, David Thurner texted that he needed another advance payment through ***** to cover the cost of materials. Since he was coming back the following morning, I sent him $700 which covered the total cost of $1200. I told him I trusted him. The following day, no one came back.  David Thurner showed up 9 days later with 4” high white PVC borders instead of wood boards. I rejected the installation of the PVC borders. He became angry and left. That evening he texted an apology and offered to refund $600 to me through ***** the next day. The money has never been refunded and he doesn’t reply to any contact attempts.

    3. Invoice/receipt for the product or service:    I requested written receipts for the 2 ***** advance payments. David Thurner agreed, but he never gave me any receipts. I do have written evidence online for the 2 ***** transfers of money to him. And my bank statement shows the 2 ***** withdrawals.

    4. Repair orders, etc.:   This was a landscape project, not a repair.

    5. The address and phone number of the company:   There is no actual company. RJ Enterprises is what David Thurner calls his handyman business. The address is his home address - **** ******** **** ********* ** *****. The phone number is David Thurner’s cell phone number - ###-###-####.

    6. Any other paperwork relating to this issue:    None. There is only the ***** and bank statements online that show the 2 advance payments.

I appreciate your help with this complaint. Please let me know if you have any further questions. This guy is a scammer. He currently is holding onto an advance payment of over $300 that one of my daughters sent to him on ***** to power wash and seal her wooden fence. He has not contacted her to set up an appointment to do the work.
    Thank you,
