We called extreme’s Beavercreek, OH office for a routine inspection on our furnace. It was working fine before the technician came out on Friday Feb 23. After being in our home for ~ 20 minutes, technician told us our furnace needed to be replaced due to a cracked heat exchanger. He showed us a blurry picture of what he said was a crack. Told us it could be a safety issue with carbon monoxide, but never ran any combustion/ co checks. Tried to tell us that the warranty was under the name of the previous home owner but said he’d still order a new furnace under the old owners name. Technician seemed ok with lying to get us a warranty replacement and told us that without the warranty the cost would be $7500. We told him we would get a second opinion. He tried to get us to agree to let his colleague come out and look at our furnace. We never heard back from either our technician or his colleague or anyone else from extreme. Had a new company inspect our furnace on Monday Feb 26. They looked at the furnace, heat exchanger, and also did a combustion analysis. They said everything was working fine and all the things tested on the combustion analysis were within limits. I’ve been searching the internet a lot over the past several days and the “cracked heat exchanger” is a scam tactic used by some dishonest hvac companies and technicians. Luckily I didn’t give them any $.

While we do not take unsafe furnaces lightly, it is company policy to have a second opinion of a furnace that *** be deemed unsafe. This is for multiple reasons, to ensure the clients safety, protect the client, ensure we are not misleading the homeowner, or misrepresenting the company. While ************** did try to get a second opinion the same day (as we do not want to leave an unsafe furnace operating) the homeowner had declined the second opinion and preferred the second opinion to be performed until the following week. The technician then called the manufacturer and explained the situation. The manufacturer approved replacing the unit to assist us in ensuring that our client was taken care of. The technician was truly trying to take care of the homeowner and not take advantage of the homeowner. Please note the technician did not collect any fee for the service visit. We are aware there are dishonest companies that try to scam people. Our Company prides ourselves in our integrity and pays our employees a fair hourly wage. This also ensures the prevention of the need to do anything unethical, as we are not here to do anything a homeowner does not want, need, or desire.
