So I bought a battery from piqua battery about 5 months ago and somehow it was a bad battery so I brought it in here and Travis from the pickle battery is trying to say that the battery's been frozen and whatnot and it has not been frozen it's only 5 months The battery shouldn't be acting like that and he won't exchange it or anything and I'm highly upset

The customer came to our store with a perceived warranty issue on a automotive flooded lead acid battery. The customer claims the battery was purchased 5 months ago. We can neither confirm nor deny the purchase date as she was unable to produce a copy of the purchase receipt and we don't keep a customer data base for cash purchases at our store. Customers are asked to keep their receipt in the unlikely event there's a product warranty issue. The product purchased was one of our refurbished/blemished economy batteries and comes with a 90 day warranty against product defect.

Our technicians followed standard warranty procedure which first starts with a visual inspection of the battery. In this case, the battery case looked significantly expanded which is an indication of the battery being overcharged or a result of the battery fluid being frozen at some point. Either condition will cause the battery case to expand and cause internal damage. During this inspection we noticed the battery was lighter than normal due to fluid loss, again indicating a overcharge condition.

A voltage check is than done to confirm the battery is fully charged. If the battery is fully charged the voltage should be 12.66 volts, this battery had an extremely low voltage of 8 volts. Low voltage causes sulfation to the battery plates thus reducing the batteries ability to function correctly.

At this point we know the battery is not a warranty as the Lead Acid Battery industry does not include low voltage, damaged cases, over charging, freezing. These conditions are considered maintenance neglect, not a defect in material or workmanship.

In regards to our tech telling the customer the battery had been frozen. The customer had taken the battery to a different battery store (not ours) before bringing it to our store. It was the other store that told her the battery had been frozen, we simply agreed this could be the case.

Solution - Despite the battery not being in a warrantable condition, we offered the customer a discount towards the purchase of a replacement battery. The customer refused this offer and exited our store. We simply cannot issue a warranty refund for a battery that is not a warranty.
