I have been dealing with black mold inside my apartment since I moved in on July 6, 2023. I have had maintenance come out multiple times and bleach the roof, wall, toilet, and under the sink, but it still comes back after a month. On Sunday September 1st 2024. I noticed that my upstairs AC unit was leaking. Maintenance came out that following day and we discovered mold all over the walls where my AC is. On the “attic” lid, on the 2x4s, and all over around it. Maintence told me that this was the cleanest one he has seen compared to most of the apartments. They then proceeded to try to bring the old lid back that closes the ac unit up and told me he bleached it, but there was still mold on it. Also, he stated that the apartment is broke and can’t afford a new lid. I am fighting to get out of my lease, but the apartment manager/owner **** & **** told me they would think about it. This is very scary to me because I have two kids that sleep in the room where the AC unit and black mold is. I’m not sure how the BBB could help but it I feel as I need to report this as it is unsafe to let people live like this.

    Business Response

    Date: 09/13/2024

    BBB letter received 9-11-24,
in the mail.  We have been working with *** ******** and replaced the
areas of his concern in his apartment (inside the toilet tank cleaned of gasket
debris, air handler access panel was replaced per his request, spot on the
ceiling was cleaned).  We were not there
when the maintenance men were, so we can’t confirm or deny conversations.  Some of the things he is saying don’t make
sense i.e. “the property is broke” is a gross falsehood.

He stated he wants to break his
lease to move out and get a house.  We spoke to *** ******** on Monday,
Sept 9th, and accommodated him with his requested move out date of October 31st.  We have fulfilled his request not because of
the complaint, but because of a history of poor housekeeping that is damaging
to our property.  We have attached just a few pictures.  He has received his second housekeeping
    violation letter.

If any further information needed, please contact us.  Thank you.

    Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because it is very incorrect. I sent this in to the BBB because the business had no remorse or accountability. The pictures they turned in with all of the clothes and stuffed animals are due to the AC continuously leaking on top of all of my daughters clothes & toys inside the closet, causing them all to have a mildew smell, which I left for them to see. They then proceeded to tell me they would think about letting me break my lease because I told them it is not safe for my kids to be sleeping in their own room. I then told them if I had to contact a lawyer and send them all of my pictures and audio recordings I would, but I was just asking to break my lease, so I don’t have to deal with the stress and mold in these apartments anymore. My daughters have both been sick on and off so much with congestion and runny noses every time they wake up. Unfortunately they are both under 5 and can’t get the allergy test done until they are 5, but have both been on cetrizine for longer than a year. **** and **** then told me I still have to pay rent in October, but I have until October 31st to get out. They poured toilet bowl cleaner in the toilet lid which had mold all in it, spray painted the lid and boards that had mold on them with regular spray paint. All they are doing is covering the mold up for the next tenant that will come in and deal with the same issues. You can see in my photos previously that this is a recurring issue. I am satisfied that they are letting me leave, but the way they handled everything is not how a business should run. They have not sent me any warnings about cleanliness except for one attached to the document that I requested for proof that they are allowing me to break the lease. You can close this ticket, but I would highly suggest looking into the lawsuits I’ve been told they already in progress with in a whole separate building than mine. Never would recommend

    Sincerely,
