I purchased a used 2017 Kia ******** in May 2024 and found out after the sale that the vehicle has a problem with "excessive oil consumption" that could result in having to replace the entire engine. This issue was not discussed or revealed to me at the time of purchase even though a ***************** Bulletin was issued and sent to ALL General Managers, Service Managers, Parts Managers Service Advisors, Technicians Body Shop Managers, and Fleet Repair in December 2020.The Service Bulletin detailed the problem and procedures to diagnose the problem, steps to fix the problem and steps to replace the engine.I was not offered any warranty and returned to the dealer after I discovered the problem. They informed me that a 1000 mile test would have to be done before I could properly service the car for the excessive oil consumption. I was informed by the Service Manager that the service, once approved, would cost $1000. and only had a 50/50 chance of success. If the service was not successful the engine would need to be replaced for $3500-$4000.I am now stuck with a "lemon" that will continue to have an excessive oil consumption problem throughout the life of the vehicle, however long that might be. The person who traded in this vehicle was probably aware of the problem and returned the vehicle at ******mi before it became a major issue. Beaverton Kia was fully aware of the excessive oil consumption issue when they advertised the vehicle for sale.I am writing this to warn potential customers of ********************** to their "shady" business practices.

I fully understand your frustration. However, an oil consumption issue is not easily identifiable and would not have been apparent during the inspection. As in your case, you purchased the vehicle in May of 2024 and did not notice the issue until 6 months later in November. The procedure to determine if an oil consumption problem exists is to service the vehicle with oil, drive it for 1000+ miles and then measure the amount of oil consumed. It is not a reasonable expectation for a dealer to go through this process before selling a pre-owned vehicle. All of our vehicles go through an extensive inspection process and any repairs are addressed before reselling them. Additionally, many people assume that the amount of oil used is excessive, when in fact, it is within the acceptable limits per the manufacturer. From your review, it appears that you have not done the consumption test yet, and that may be the best place to start.

The consumption test was done with a authorized local repair shop which is why I discovered the excessive oil consumption problem and began to research this issue with other *** owners via the internet and the *** website. At that time I had driven the car over 1000 miles from May to November. I was referred to and discovered the ******************** sent to ALL *** dealers and their key personnel. Kia ********************** was well aware of the potential excessive oil consumption issue on this particular year and model as stated in the Service Bulletin. This is the reason they made the decision to sell the vehicle as non-certified and without warranty "As Is". The service timeline even stated that they had to add 5 quarts of oil on 10/16/24 after the vehicle had traveled only 3829 mi and another quart of oil on 11/15/24 after the vehicle had traveled ONLY 681 miles.I think that would be a clear indication of ************* Consumption.
