This transaction was made on 02/18/2025. I dropped the car off around 1:30 pm that day and received a call that it was done around 4:30 pm on the same day. I was told the price was $975. When I asked about why it was so much, they simply said it was a hard place to get to. I had been quoted $550 by a **** dealership to get a comparison. I feel like I was gouged in price especially for only 2 to 3 hours of work.Initial Complaint

Invoice date. 07/18/2023 $695.72. Refund requested $93.73. Been going to this Midas since at least 2011 and have done the brakes on my car a few times there, rotors and pads. Under the old owner (Will) they seemed legit and honest. Now under new owners they are being shady.Supposed to have lifetime warranty on brake pads but charged me for them even though they did my brakes last. Midas has had that lifetime warranty on brake pads since at least the early ****s. So, my pads should be free as they did my brakes before. Brought it to their attention and **** the manager looked up in the computer while I was picking up my car and said it was only a 90-day warranty. (Guessing he assumed I wouldnt have my old invoices)Got home and looked at last invoice for brakes and it clearly says lifetime warranty for pads. Called them and got the oh we must have read the old invoices wrong. They knew that they did my brakes before and that they have had this policy in place for at least 20 years so this is shady. They eventually agreed to refund me for the pads but only if I come down to the shop. Midas can take my payments by card over the phone, but they refuse to do refunds/credits over the phone. **** the manager claimed at first that he didnt know how to do it over the phone and then changed the story that now he needs an authorization code, but the new owners will not give him one. Says he will call me back but never does. Im not driving all the way to the shop so they can find more ways to waste my time and then make more excuses why they cant or wont credit my account.Business Response

You are correct that the brake pads are lifetime warranty, Unfortunately our vehicle history does not go that far back, I'm glad you have your receipt, We have no problem doing a refund, The only issue is with our new software we have to be able to swipe the card for the refund we have no ************* a payment on the phone, If you come into the store we can take care of you.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:This is simply another barrier to issuing a refund. Making me drive to their location. Saying they will do this is a sham to get past this complaint and keep their A business rating. They will then refuse or find another excuse as to why they cannot issue a partial refund when I show up to their office. If they can take a credit card payment by phone then they can issue credit refunds by phone. Their version of events and solutions keep changing. If I drive to their location what will the next excuse be that they cannot issue a refund? The machine is broken? They need an authorization code that only the owners can supply but won't? They do have access to their old invoices as they looked up what I provided while I was in their office and showed it to me. Minus the lifetime warranty that shows on my old invoice. I was told they only needed an authorization code to issue a partial refund by phone and they would call me back with that. They never called back and now we are back to, come down to our office. They can say this is the solution but none of their solutions actually pan out or I wouldn't need to submit a public complaint to get them to respond without me having to call.
Sincerely,

On April 8th, 2023 I took my ****** Sequioa to be serviced. I booked an oil change with free tire rotation and a front-end alignment. This service was being comped for a previous service that was they failed to complete on my other vehicle. ****** Pies from the shop called 45 minutes later to inform me the front-end alignment wasn't the problem. They stated that the struts were shot, and needed to be replaced. They said the cost for that service was $909.00. I told them I could not afford to do this at this time. Then ***************** said the tech reported that there was no coolant in the reservoir, or radiator and he recommended filling. I was not at the shop to verify this, but I went ahead and approved this. The charge for this was $147.49. At 10am I received a phone call from ****** Pies telling me that the vehicle was completed. I let him know that I would drive over around noon in my other vehicle to pay the bill. The ride I had arraigned to pick up the Sequioa wouldn't be until after closing so I wanted to pay and get my keys back. I arrived at the shop at 12:15pm. I observed my vehicle had been moved out of the service bay and parked out in the parking lot. I went inside and reviewed my bill, looking at the services, the parts and the labor charges.Midas charged me for 6.5 quarts of synthetic oil blend and one oil filter. According to the invoice, this oil change service had been completed, as well as the radiator flush and fill. Their invoice led me to believe that the vehicle was ready to drive, and they had started and driven the vehicle before I arrived at the shop. My ride took me up to Midas at 6:00pm, and dropped me off. I entered my vehicle and started the engine. I immediately detected a problem. the lifters were clicking and tapping, the engine was knocking and running roughly. The dash warning lights for low oil, hot oil and service engine needed all came on. I shut the engine down immediately. There was absolutely no oil in the oil pan.Business Response

Customer was refunded for oil he purchased after hours, Customer was refunded for oil change we did and customer was given a free oil change for his next visit , We had customers car towed back into the shop , We drained oil that customer put in to verify there was no damage to the engine, Upon inspection there were no signs of metal shavings in oil, Tech did a compression check on all engine cylinders and all are within specifications, We checked for any engine codes and there were none, Overall no internal engine damage was found at this time.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because: Midas did not refund the money that I spent buying oil and funnel at 7:00pm Saturday April 8th.

Midas never refunded the money I spent to correct their negligence and failure to add oil back to my vehicle, and there are other conditions that have not been met.
The tests performed by Midas to check for engine damage were not adequate. A compression test will not show any damage that occurred when Midas started my engine and drove the vehicle. For that period of time, there was no lubrication for moving engine parts.
The compression check will only show if there is damage to the parts only responsible for compression, i.e. pistons and rings.
A compression test will not show damage to the bearings, crankshaft, camshaft, cylinder head, valves and connecting rods.
My neighbor is a Harley mechanic, and he helped me extract metal particulate from the oil pan. Midas claimed there wasnt any metal found in the engine oil.
My engine would have had a catastrophic failure had I not saved the motor by taking the steps needed before driving my vehicle. I spent 4 hours Saturday night preventing this from happening to my vehicle. I expect Midas to reimburse me for the 4 hours of my time, at the same $80 hourly rate they have charged me, ($320.00)
I prevented Midas from having to replace my engine, a cost somewhere between $5000 and $7000.
If Midas is so sure they have done their due diligence concerning my engine, then I expect Midas to draw up a 1 year-***** mile warranty to cover any cost for parts and labor at the mechanic of my choice for any engine problems and failures I may experience.
In the future, Midas will not service any of my vehicles ever again. The free oil change they are supposedly offering me isnt something I will ever do again.
I have spoken with my mechanic, and he stated that the oil pan would have to be dropped to discover any metal fragments that could be attached to the magnet, that he said is in my oil pan at the lowest point. He quoted me $3100 to perform this service. He said he did not recommend doing this unless Midas would pay for it.
They would have to warranty their engine diagnosis, for me to not pursue this service at the mechanic of my choice.
There were many other problems that occurred after the vehicle returned home. I have outlined the entire event in link below, and detailed my time for which I expect reimbursement from Midas.Business Response

I have checked with the store manager and the customer was not given a refund for oil and funnel he had to purchase, If customer comes into the store we are more than happy to do that, As far as the customers statement about engine damage, All compression in the engine is within specs and there is no damage due to the oil not being put in, If there was any damage to the engine there would be a loud knocking noise and the vehicle would barley run,Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because Midas did not perform the tests that were recommended by my mechanic. I also expect to be fully compensated for any and all time I spent correcting their error. If Midas is not willing to reimburse my time and expenses, I believe my only recourse at this time is to file a cause of action in Clackamas County Small Claims Court.
Sincerely,

On 02/17/23, I brought my vehicle in for an engine diagnosis as it was failing to start, which I paid for. It was thought that a hole in the engine manifold was causing the problem, which was replaced at my expense. However, the vehicle continued to have the same problem and began backfiring. Instead of offering to resolve the issue, I was informed the vehicle was safe to drive on which resulted in a catastrophic failure of the engine resulting in the need for its replacement. I contacted the location and was informed that they would replace the engine at their expense if was determined they were at fault. It was then determined that a headgasket failure caused the engine to stop functioning. However, a headgasket replacement would be a cheaper and easier fix than replacing the entire engine. If the appropriate service had been offered, there would be no need to replace the engine. I am seeking a new engine for this vehicle and I don't want to pay for it replacing the engine should not be necessary in the first place.Business Response

Vehicle came in due to a ticking noise and backfire , Upon inspection tech found a hole in the exhaust manifold, Customer approved repairs and noise was gone after manifold replacement,
Vehicle came back a few days later due to customer seeing a puff of white smoke out of exhaust she pulled over and called us and said her motor blew up, We removed the engine head and
found a hole in the engine block, customer believes that we should have known there was an internal engine problem when we replaced the exhaust manifold, customer was advised that the
noise she came in with was fixed and if we knew there was an internal engine issue at that time the vehicle would not have been able to drive let alone get her home and driven for 3-4 days
, The engine failure is not
related to changing a exhaust manifold and we have no way if seeing inside an engine or predict any future failures, She will need to pay for any further engine repairs.
