Oct.2024 my personal use vehicle was impounded by the sheriff. After obtaining documents they requested, I paid a fee to have them release it from sheriff hold at the tow company. The *** company says they are in a contract with the sheriff that allows the sheriff to charge approx. $1100 to tow even though the state max is $250. My vehicle is being stored for $125 @ day and is a ***** pound truck. How do I request they reduce their fees is this legal?

The above call was called in to be picked up by the *******************. We do have contracted rates with the *******************. Police calls are contracted with many different towing companies, and they are inflated. The reason for this is that a high percentage of people do not have insurance, and we do not get paid for a lot of vehicles we pick up. There are 2 types of police calls, preference and nonpreference. If, when getting your vehicle impounded, you ask the sheriff for a certain company, they will call them, these rates would be our regular rates. This is a preference call, and we are not charged to do the call. If you dont ask for a certain towing company, they pick one and its considered a nonpreference. With nonpreference calls, they call whoever is next up on the rotation to pick up a vehicle, including all companies that they are contracted with. All towing companies pay them a fee every time they call us for a pickup. This is where the higher rates come in. The police departments all contract with numerous towing companies, the reason for the contracted rates is because if they called towing companies and they didnt ever get paid for their service, no one would work with them, and the roads would not be cleared. You can view our contracted police rates at the police department, and we also have them at our office on a binder on the counter for anyone to look at. Im sorry you had a bad experience, hopefully this will help you in the future.
