CRM Construction Services LLC built a porch roof over my front deck. The roof was to be a cathedral type 16’x24’. I was assured that they were competent to do the work as they had built carports in the same manor. During the planning process I was given several options for materials. It was decided that I would procure rafters through an Amish sawmill sized 2x6”x12’ per his request. He would supply other materials including several laminated beams sized 2”x12”x16’. As the work progressed he was ready to start setting rafters and he asked me “what are we doing about the ridge beam?” I said I thought you ordered material for that. He said”no” and then said “ You can use 2”x6”x16’s “ and proceeded to explain that since the sidewalls were built with laminated beams the ridge would be self supporting and would not require anything larger then the for-mentioned. Per his request for a double 2”x6”x16’ “beam” I returned to the amish for the material. Throughout the job I paid him several times along the way. When the job was complete I paid the final invoice. 3 months later and I notice my roof is sagging significantly along the ridge and equally the left sidewall was pushed out. I called him to come take a look and once he saw it he measured that it was deflected 3” in the center. He requested I hire an engineer at my expense to decide the correct fix. And so I hired Gerhart Engineering Company at the cost of $400. He proceeded to exclaim that the ridge was extremely undersized and actually required a double 2”x12”x16’ laminated beam. It took several attempts but after a couple months he did come to replace the beam that had failed. Once that was completed I asked him what we were going to do about this bill. He said “what do you want to do? I offered to pay half. He sent an inflated invoice. Labor was $700 per day previously and now it was $1100. Also added a “fuel surcharge” and charged for ordering material. And has harassed me and my wife several times since.
