On September 19, 2023 I had A-1 Concrete Leveling level my side walk leading to my front porch and the sidewalk to the garage man door. They also leveled the two pads in front of the garage doors. They charged me $1,500.00. The problem is they raised the pad in front of the porch with the stairs over 1 1/2 inches out of level. That caused the stair spacing to be to small at the top plus the stairs slope down. This has caused a safety hazard. My wife who is 65 years old refuses to use the stairs because she is afraid of loosing her balance and falling. This is our main entrance to our house. I called A-1 Concrete Leveling told them of the problem. On June 5, 2024 they had a manager come out to look at the problem. He agreed that the steps were out of level and he would get back with me in a couple of days on how they could fix the problem. He never did get back with me so on June 21, 2024 I called their office and talked with a lady and to see what was going on and she said she would talk to the manager and call me right back. I did not receive a phone call from them. I had another contractor come and look at the stairs and he also agreed that it was a safety problem and A-1 caused the safety problem by over filling the back of the pad causing it to be out of level. A-1 has not tried to resolve the problem or contact me to this day. The company has no respect for its customers.

      Hello,

Please see attached estimate that was provided and approved for work to be completed by Mr. Craker. The work was completed 9/19/23. Mr. Craker had no issues with our completed work as indicated in the approved estimate. Mr. Cracker called us 9 months later on 5/29/24 and stated the the WW was starting to settle again and is creating another trip hazard. Mr. Craker has a 1 year warranty on the the work we completed. We sent our project manager out on 6/5/24 to take a look at the work we completed. Upon reviewing the work we completed and speaking with Mr. Craker on site, we learned the issue was with the steps and not with the work that we completed. As you can see from the estimate, we did not do any work on the steps. During conversation between the Project Manager and Mr. Craker, Mr. Craker also stated that the crew did not move the step to level the pad under the steps. We only lifted the front of the WW as indicated in the estimate to eliminate the trip hazard on the walk way. We stand behind our work. If there would have been a concern with the areas that we leveled we absolutely would have corrected it.

      Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID 22122036, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

This is why I disagree with the A-1 Concrete Leveling statements.  The first thing is on their estimate that they sent you. It lists two driveway slabs and both the front and garage man door walkway listed on description.  On the location pictures they have two driveway slabs and sidewalk to the garage man door but pictures of the front sidewalk and the slab going to the porch are missing.  They were on the original estimate.  Why did they omit these pictures?  Maybe because they did not want you to see them.  A-1 also said that I approved the  work on the estimate, but how can you approve the work on the estimate when the work has not been done? I called A-1 shortly after they completed the job and spoke to a lady in their office.  I told her I had a concern about the slab in front of the porch that the steps set on being too high in the back.  She told me to wait for a couple of months and let it settle.  I never called and told them that the slab was settling like they said in their response.  At the end of May I called them and told them that the slab in front of the porch was too high in the back and creating a hazard.  On June 5, 2024 Mr. Argiro who is the project manager came to the house to look at the problem.  At that time he agreed that the slab was too high in the back.  He put a level on it and said that it was 2 inches out of level.  The only issue with the steps is that they are sitting on an out of level slab caused by A-1.  I did not tell Mr. Argiro that his crew did not move the steps.  He asked me if his crew moved the steps and I told him I did not know if they did or not because I feel it was not my job to babysit his crew. That's when Mr.Argiro noticed that the steps  were moved because you could see the marks where the steps used to be. In the first attachment I have attached a picture of the slab before they did their work.  In the picture you can see that the back of the slab needed to be raised up to level the slab.  The front was ok because it was already even with the sidewalk.  A-1 claimed it was not and that it was a trip hazard. The second attachment is a picture of the slab after their work was completed. In this picture you can see that the slab is high in the back.  They raised the slab 4 inches in the back. In the third  attachment it will show that the slab is 2 inches out of level.  I don't understand how they can say that they did not cause the problem. Just by looking at the pictures you can see that they did. They claim that they stand behind their work but this is not the case.  Now you can see why they did not include the pictures that were in the original estimate. If you need any more information from me please let me know.

      Thank you for your help,

      Bill Craker

      Hello,

Please see attached email to Mr. Craker from the Project Manager and from Mr. Craker approving the work with the same estimate that we sent to you attached. We did exactly what we said we were going to do in the estimate. We did no work on Mr. Craker's step or the back pad that the step is sitting on. Again had we did work on the step we happily would fix/correct any concerns with it. But as you can see in the estimate provided to Mr. Craker and approved by Mr. Craker no work was completed or estimated to be completed on his step. As indicated previously we did provide a warranty for the work that we estimated and completed.

A-1 Concrete has not offered anything but is still  denying that they did not touch the front pad.
Attachment # 1 is a picture of the front pad before they did any work.  This shows the distance between the top of the step and the top of the porch to be about 9 1/2 inches and the pad is sloping towards the porch which is improper sloping.  A-1 Concrete was to level the pad.  Attachment #2 is the picture after their work was completed.  Which shows the top of the step and the top of the porch is now only 5 1/2 inches.  Now the pad is sloping away from the porch and is 2 inches out of level.  That has caused the step spacing to be too small at the top, plus the stairs now slopes down which causes a trip hazard.  If A-1 Concrete didn't touch the pad then how did the pad get so high and out of level?  Attachment #3,4 and 5 shows that I had the steps moved and you can see the drill hole that is circled in blue where they put their material in to raise the pad.  They also drilled a hole in front of the steps and several holes in the front walkway.  If A-1 Concrete did not touch the pad like they claim why does it have their drill holes in it?  Pictures do not lie.  Anyone looking at the pad can tell that A-1 Concrete did work on the pad and messed it up.  In June when the project manager came to look at the problem he agreed that the pad was out of level.  He said that he was going to go back and talk to his boss and see what they could do to fix the problem because he did not know how to fix the problem. I had another contractor come and look at the pad and in order to fix the problem the pad has to be broken out and removed.  All the material they put in must also be removed and the ground must be packed and leveled again. Then a new pad can be poured and the steps can be replaced.  This will not be an easy or cheap fix.  That is why I think they chose to lie about touching the pad even though they knew they were at fault.  A-1 Concrete said if they had caused the problem they would have fixed it.  All the evidence shows that they were at fault but they chose to lie and screw over an elderly couple.

I was not able to attached the pictures with this form. I did send [email protected] the 5 attachments which goes with this.

      Hello,

Thank you for the pictures. As stated in previous responses we were under the impression that we did not move the step. We are not arguing that the step is not level. We will and do stand behind our work 100%. We apologize that this has gone this long. As mentioned prior our first questions were regarding if we moved and drilled under the step. It was indicated that we did not. As mentioned previously if we had known that we moved the step, we would have taken care of this prior. We will have our project manager John and the crew return to the job site, so that they can move the step and correct the problem. We will also add a 1 year warranty to the area that is being corrected. Please let us know when we can follow up with a phone call to get this corrected immediately.

      Thank you,

      Tiffany

The offer is way too late to fix the problem now. The crew that did the work knew that part of the estimate was to raise the pad under the steps.  They raised the pad over 4 inches which was way too high.  Which caused the safety problem.  The crew did nothing to fix it.  After several calls to A-1 Concrete I got John Argiro, (A-1 project manager), to come out to look at the problem.  He knew the pad was part of the estimate.  After looking at the pad John could see that his crew did not level the pad correctly.  He was to contact me with a fix after talking to his boss.  He did not call me back and did not answer any of my calls.  I think they were wasting time to stretch it out to get pass the one year warranty.  I filed a complaint with the BBB to get some answers to what they were going to do to fix the problem.  A-1's answer to the complaint was that the pad under the steps was not part of the estimate.  They also said that they did not touch the pad.  That was the first time I heard that story.  I had to send numerous photos to prove that they lied and made false statements to the BBB regarding their work.  They knew all along that their crew moved the steps and if they didn't they should of asked their crew.  They could of come out to the house any time to look at their crews work,  It has been over a year that we could not safely use the main entrance to our house.  Both walkways that they worked on are already starting to sink causing a trip hazard.  The work that they did was way far below standards and the way they lied and treated us unprofessional.  They put a elderly couple through a lot of unnecessary hassle and grief.  They say they stand behind their work but obviously is untrue.  I do not want a business like that to do any work for me.  Because of everything A-1 Concrete has put us through and the original work has to be redone i am requesting a full refund of $1,500.00.
