    I was a mostly satisfied customer of IC Group’s POBox.com URL and email forwarding “for life” service for twenty-five years, though they did occasionally lose some, but not all, of my renewal checks. But they recently told me that they were ending the URL forwarding in May, which will require me to buy new business cards; there’s nothing I can do about my soon-to-be-killed URL for life in my articles in academic journals. They did offer me a $10 credit, which I declined; that won’t even cover the cost of new cards.

    Their claim is that “maintaining URL redirects is not viable with our upcoming interface changes,” but that makes no sense, assuming they are not planning to hijack existing customer URLs: Those begin with a “~”; any URL their interface would use would not. Continuing to forward customer URLs would only take a small amount of work, and has no impact on the user interface. It is much easier than forwarding email, as it only requires sending a 3xx http response and a few header lines. Redirecting customer URLs, and forwarding the company’s URLs to their servers, could probably be handled by a Raspberry Pi Linux server costing about $50, plus a simple (and free) Apache web server plug-in.
