I am writing due to a medical bill I have from UPMC St. Margaret’s Hospital in Fox Chapel Pa.

I’ll start at the beginning.  On June 5th, 2021 I fell at home taking out the trash.  I felt sore however the next day I went to UPMC Urgent Care at **** ********* ***** ******* *******, ** ***** due to not being able to move my L arm upward.  They did X-Rays, told me not to go to work, and to make an appointment with an Ortho.

      I was a ****** ** ******** ****** ************ **. My medical insurance through them was ***** This is during COVID.

My Ortho appointment was set up with Dr. Raymond D*******, **** ********* ********** ************* ***** on June 14th, 2021 (8 days after X-rays).  He ordered an MRI (6/25/21- 11 more days).  A follow up was done with Dr. D******* 0n 7/13/21, I had a complete tear of the  L shoulder (Z98.890 Primary) Adhesive capsulitis of L shoulder and unable to raise arm needed surgery to repair.  I was set to have surgery ay Allegheny Valley Hospital on 8/30/21 however my work insurance would not let me continue to pay out of pocket for my insurance and was cutting me off on 8/28/21.  So surgery was bumped up to 8/25/21 at St Margarets (almost 3 months since accident on 6/5/21.  I look like I had a stroke as my arm hangs by my L side; unless in sling).   I was getting a COBRA and didn’t want any problems with surgery being covered.     I was told that St. Margarets took my insurance if Dr. D******* did surgery there, I questioned this with D******* staff and hospital.   Again this is all during Covid and everywhere is understaffed and I guess reason wait was so long to have surgery to begin with.  Had I not taken this date the wait would be even longer…

On 8/20/21 I paid for what I thought was my co-payment for Dr. D*******/Surgery.
      $1200.00.

After surgery, I was not working, I started paying 636.84 for Cobra insurance (because HR knew nothing about other insurances, after 6 months got on Together Blue), had to purchase a recliner to sleep in for 3 months healing (1460.68), and was receiving short term disability from work (only 3 months).

I am not trying to get out of a bill if I owe this but I have never understood why I paid $1200.00 copay and then they put 1000.00 back on my credit card and I was sent a bill from St Margarets for $5,914.97!

This bill is now down to $3300.00 as I have been paying a collection agency 100.00 monthly.   I’ve procrastinated writing this as maybe that is what I owe, but why didn’t they keep the 1000. 00 I initially put down?  And I also get angry because due to Covid I had almost a 3 month wait for surgery.   If I’d had surgery in a timely manner my work insurance wouldn’t have been cutting me off (then no Cobra)and my short term disability through work would have covered time for healing.  Instead, I had lots to pay out of pocket.    I worked in a nursing home giving therapy to patients with gown, mask and face guard.  Other people got help while I was working and then when I needed help, I felt there was none.

I am now working 3 days a week for an eye doctor, collecting my late husband’s SS and some disability due to unable to do my therapy job.

I have tried calling CMS, Cigna … long waits, no one knows – transfers more waits…  this is it.  Whatever you say will be final.  Thank you for listening.
