Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. We have carefully reviewed the vehicle's service history with our service manager, JT, and would like to provide further clarification regarding your 2010 Mini ****** S.
Upon review, we found that your vehicle has never had the timing chains replacedneither as a customer pay repair nor under any warranty or recall campaign at Mini of Pittsburgh. However, on November 2, 2012, with ***** miles on the vehicle, we did replace the timing chain tensioner under warranty due to a reported engine rattle noise. This repair was done correctly and addressed the issue at the time.
There was a Timing Chain Warranty Extension (SIM 01-07-16), which extended coverage for 7 years or ******* miles. However, as of 2017, when you brought your vehicle to us, it was outside the warranty period.
It's important to address that a faulty timing chain alone would not cause metal to appear in the engine oil. Typically, if there were an issue with the timing chain, it would trigger a check engine light before any internal engine damage occurredunless that warning was ignored. Instead, oil-related issues, such as leaks or lack of regular oil changes, can lead to low oil pressure and oil starvation, which would prevent the timing chain tensioner from maintaining proper tension, potentially leading to internal damage.
We have also found that, over the life of the vehicle, there have been several recommended repairs, including oil leak repairs, which were declined during various service visits. Prolonged low oil levels and lack of regular maintenance are known contributors to engine damage, including the issues your vehicle is currently facing.
While we fully understand the frustration this situation has caused, the current state of the engine appears to be linked to a combination of factors, including the vehicle's maintenance history, rather than the timing chain tensioner replacement performed in 2012.
If you would like to discuss this matter further or explore possible repair options, please dont hesitate to reach out to us directly. We are here to assist in any way we can.
    Sincerely,
    ***** *****

My apologies for allowing this to linger.

I spoke to my Warranty Administrator on this issue. His response was actually simpler than anything else.

As for the claim that we should be held responsible for repairs that occurred in 2017,  if we repaired/replaced timing chain in 2017 then the warranty period on that part would have expired 2 years from the date in which the part was installed.  So in this case the parts warranty would be expired and the repairs are considered the clients responsibility.
