We had water damage to our home. It destroyed our kitchen, hallway, bathroom, and the basement. Our friend recommended this person. Our friend was shocked to hear about this situation and also tried to get ahold of this contractor and no answer. We paid $20,000 for the 1st floor job - estimated for $22,885. We gave $10,000 on 10/01/2022. We gave another $10,000 on 10/11/2022. The contractor was the one who requested this much money at once so he was able to get supplies and paid for labor. The job was not completed. The things that WERE completed were also done wrong, not up to code, illegally, measurements are wrong, and there are damages to our new items. The things NOT finished add up to $9,175. This is THEFT. The things that were done have to be taken out and RE-DONE, costing even more money. The reason he stopped working is because he wanted another payment when the job wasn’t even close to being completed. He refused to show receipts when asked. And refused to give his information to the insurance company. We reached out to him privately through phone call, text, and certified letter over the course of 6 weeks. He is not responding. We need our home fixed and our money back. We have children in this home, no kitchen counters, no kitchen sink. Only 1 sink in the house and it is a temporary wash sink in the bathroom. One wall still isn’t finished there are nails and metal sticking out.Business Response

To whom it may concern:
I'm responding to these homeowners lies and nonsense he continues to speak about me. He signed a contract with me for $39,500 to do upstairs cabinets, flooring, painting, trim, etc.. and downstairs flooring and a little bathroom. I went over the price 3 times with him and his wife and how I came up with it. I stated the payment schedule would end up being around $10,000/week because it was a 4-5 week job. He said the funds were there from insurance company. I dropped 2 other jobs I had going to help this family out because of there situation. I've been in the contracting business over 30 years. I only do word of mouth and people I know because of nonsense like this. My friend recommended this kid and asked if I could help him out. I do all my work like it was my own house. The first 2 weeks of this job were fine and then this kid starts questioning me on everything despite him knowing nothing about home improvement. I am very patient and have a lot of tolerance with homeowners. That ends when the homeowner says he has no more funds, due to insurance not paying him. He starts trying to dictate new terms and wants to see receipts for everything despite him already signing a contract for the amount of $39,500. He said he liked all the work and there were no issues except he said he wasn't putting any more money out. I tried to reason over the phone with him for an hour and remedy this situation to no avail. He said just grab your tools and we need to part ways. I did just that despite the fact that the majority of the money I would make from the job was on the back end. He contacts me a month and a half later and says he wants the majority of the money back from the job. I called my wife and she said just block his number. I refuse to be part of his nonsense and insanity any longer. In his little complaint He said things were done wrong, that's a lie. He said not up to code, didn't know you had a code on cabinets and flooring, never heard such nonsense. Measurements were wrong, have no idea what this kid is even saying. Its just all lies. He had a brand-new kitchen short of countertops because he refused to make the next payment. He had brand new entire first floor flooring. All new trim. Entire first floor painted. Besides tons of extras, I did for nothing, recessed lighting, wainscoting on a couple walls and was going to do other stuff out of the kindness of my heart. The first-floor materials were over $13,000, my guy and I were there for almost a month. My worker made more then I did. I can tolerate almost anything but not liars who talk about my work. This kid filed a report at the police station saying I ripped him off. I had to take off work and once again deal with this matter, the never-ending nightmare of a job. They sent my report and statement to the DA, from what the officer told me he basically laughed and said why are you wasting my time with this matter. The contractor did nothing wrong. The homeowner refused to make the next payment. End of story. The job was for $39,500. This kid keeps saying $22,885. I honestly now believe he was trying to scam me into just doing the first floor and him putting the rest of the insurance money in his pocket. This kid has put my family and I through hell over the last 5 months. I'm a Christian man and would never do any one wrong. People call me because it's quality work done at a fair price. I've been doing work for the same people and all their friends for the last 30 years. People call me because I always take care of them. Bottom line, if this kid didn't want to make the next payment, how could I possibly continue the job? That's what happened. The only job I ever walked off in my life and financially had to suffer. I apologize for this response being long, but I felt the need to explain the truth however long, to cover the lies being said about me.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:Responding to the contractor’s claims with 100% facts & physical/documented proof. We signed a contract for $39,500. This is for BOTH upstairs AND downstairs. He made many comments about heightening the prices on the contract, before we signed, and taking shortcuts to save us money and to make sure there was plenty of wiggle room, since it was such a large job. The current issue is the UPSTAIRS. For the UPSTAIRS, the quote was $22,885. We had already given $20,000! And only 60% of the upstairs was completed and he was asking for MORE MONEY. This raised red flags immediately. His entire attitude changed after he received our second payment of $10k; 10 days after he started. It was like he really didn’t care about the job anymore and the amount of hours worked started to decline drastically. RED FLAG. The insurance company also HALTED the money because he refused to give receipts, and proof of business, W9 forms, insurance, and registration to the insurance company when asked. He would not answer the adjuster’s phone calls. They need to know where their money is going. He had expired HIC#. It expired July 2021. He only quickly registered in December 2022, 2 months after he left our job, when he finally spoke to the detective (after avoiding him for a month), and realized he could be in trouble for it. Since you need to be registered to do a job over $5k. We are not even sure if he was insured the entire time. He also mentioned the job only taking 3-4 weeks for the *entire* job - upstairs AND downstairs - (he even admits this himself..) so when it was 4 weeks later and the upstairs still isn’t close to being completed, this was another red flag. There is way more than just the countertops unfinished. (We can attach photos of all) The upstairs bathroom was not even touched. The majority of the remaining money was supposed to be for DOWNSTAIRS. He mentioned to us, in the beginning, $10k a week because the ENTIRE job - upstairs AND DOWNSTAIRS - was only supposed to take 4 weeks. 10k a week would make sense *IF* it was week 2 and he was finished with upstairs, ready to move downstairs. But that clearly isn’t the case. In his response he claims the downstairs is only the flooring and “small bathroom.” This is wrong, because the contract clearly has all the things that need to be done: $16,365 to be exact. In his response he claims we “liked” all the work and there “weren’t any issues,” but we had mentioned MANY issues with a few things throughout the time span of him being here. He also admits this himself by saying we were “questioning everything.” He got very defensive every time an issue was brought up, and then never cared to fix the concerns. He claimed and still claims we have no experience, but little does he know- my father had own contracting business for many years before he passed. This “man” continues to be condescending, trying to insult us, calling us “kid” when we are 30 years old. This is unprofessional on so many levels. There were many things we had to stop him from doing and correct before he did them, and then many we brought up after they were done. We have many many many photos of the unfinished work and the issues with the work that was done. We have a list of all the red flags. We have every ounce of proof. In his response he also mentioned how he had to take off work and his family is stressed trying to pull pity, but we have had to take off work, many days, trying to get new estimates for our home to be RE-DONE and appointments with law enforcement and detectives because we were scammed out of $20,000!! His family wouldn’t have to be stressed if he took responsibility. We are the ones who have been stressing and “through hell” with two SMALL CHILDREN, a toddler and infant with no kitchen, unfinished walls with nails sticking out, unfinished flooring, no bathroom vanity, he left the sewer lines wide open spewing those fumes into the home. We have to wash dishes and baby bottles in the bathroom. We’ve had thanksgiving, Christmas, PLUS both kid’s birthdays with this mess!! Unable to have family and friends over to celebrate. And then on top: wondering how we’re going to get this mess fixed and money back when it could have been PROPERLY completed months ago, had we gotten a reputable contractor. He needs to stop pulling the “Christian man” excuse because he scammed us with that one too. If he was a reputable contractor he wouldn’t be worried about having an actual business page with honest reviews. There is a reason it is only “word of mouth” and it is not because he is “good.”
