We are in the process of building a house. There is ************** to be done. **** started with his best foot forward. We started with a smaller project (installing joist hangers and I-beams, laying plywood on second floor and framing the downstairs unit) to see how capable he was. We supplied ALL of the materials and scaffolding so he was only being paid for his expertise and labor. My 65 year old husband also assisted **** with some of that labor himself working right alongside of him - drilling holes and screws into the cement block, handing up plywood to the second floor and helping with framing. **** completed most of the job and my husband gave him a great review on Thumbtack. Then **** needed money and wanted us to sign a contract for the next step and provide a deposit in advance... for labor?? (Seriously?!?). We did not hesitate to pay him for the days he worked and actually did give him some cash in advance in the beginning to pay for his friend that helped the one day and was not even a skilled laborer. However, I am uncomfortable paying for labor in advance so he chose to take another job and not finish ours. He still needed to trim the second floor plywood so the block layers could come...a job that literally took 5 minutes. He forgot the ledger board above the door downstairs (actually he was supposed to have installed the ledger board BEFORE the I-beam). He failed to complete the framing of the bathroom and never even started framing the garage divider wall. After about a week of no contact, I texted him to see if and when he planned to return and all I got was excuses. We had to pay someone else to complete the job and he lost out on further bidding with us. My advice - DO NOT EVER pay this man a deposit in advance...only for work actually completed!!!
