I would like to submit a complaint about my experience with the Penn Medicine billing system. I gave birth to my daughter on 9/28/23, and I did not receive a single bill (in the mail or electronically in my patient portal) from Penn Medicine for any services. In April 2024, I received a letter in the mail from a pre-collections agency requesting an amount of money owed to Penn Medicine for services. Confused, I called patient billing at ************* and was told that a "freeze" was put on my account in June of 2023 because a letter was returned that Penn Medicine sent out to me. Furthermore, the collection agency told me that there were 5 accounts about to go into collections under my guarantor number. I was forced to pay for the services over the phone without first viewing a bill since these bills were going to collections. I still have not received a single bill for myself from Penn Medicine to date (May 2024) for any services I received from them from the birth of my daughter in September 2023. I was told that I would receive the bills in the mail and in my portal since I "validated" my address over the phone and they were allowed to be released to me. Please note, my addressed has remained unchanged for the past 4 years. This is completely outrageous and unacceptable. Penn Medicine which prides itself on a "no surprise billing policy", clearly did not BILL the patient. When I inquired multiple times about why no one reached out to me in the portal, on-site when I had my doctor visits, and two trips to the hospital (during which I confirmed my address multiple times), the only response that I received was "this is our policy." To this day, I have no idea what I paid for from Penn Medicine. It is distressing that I had to pay for services without first viewing the breakdown of the costs of services and what I specifically owed as a patient.
