    I was employed at Berks Eye Physicians and Surgeons until July 5th, 2023. Before this time, I was in active treatment for an eye issue. Dr. ************************ was overseeing my treatment. One of the benefits to working at Berks Eye was appointments were no charge unless you have to have testing or require surgery. On July 5th I was terminated from the practice and my medical insurance terminated immediately. To continue my appointments, I had to pay "Self-Pay" amounts with no discount. I was also in active cancer treatments that the administrator of the practice was aware about. When I got medical benefits from another job and continued my follow up appointments, they were not billing my insurance correctly. I questioned it several times and Dr. ************* advised he would not charge me for post op appointments after my procedure. This was never relayed and adjusted. Now the office has sent me to collections. While I was employed there, I was told several times by the Administrator that we do not send any employee or ex-employee to collections. When I was terminated, I was left with no insurance and no unemployment because the Administrator came up with an elaborate reasoning for my termination which resulted in the state refusing my unemployment. This is absolute despicable place to work with no compassion and morals.

    It is quite regrettable that this former employee is unhappy that they did not receive a courtesy discount after termination.  This individual was informed at first visit after no longer employed that she would be responsible for charges for this and future visits  - and actually paid that July 19 visit in full.  It is charges for subsequent visits - after patient presented HIghmark insurance adjudicated her claims - that amounts deemed patient responsibility (deductible and coinsurance) by Highmark that remains unpaid. 

    It does appear the former employee did not opt to take COBRA coverage offered, and may have had a period of time without medical insurance coverage from July 6 through July 31.  However,all unpaid patient responsibility is after new insurance was in effect.  Berks Eye Physicians & Surgeons and all medical providers are contractually obligated to bill patients and attempt to collect these amounts to be in compliance with insurance contracts.
