On May 30th, 2024, I paid The Barrett Group $12,500 to assist me in securing a senior-level job in the technology sector. My decision was based on my discussions with ***** ****, the sales executive, who outlined the following commitments:1. The Barrett Group would conduct outreach to other executives using their database.2. Having spent 18 years with one company, my networking was limited. I was clear from the start that the primary reason for hiring *** was their promise to introduce me to their contacts and help me access the unpublished job market.3. I would have multiple job offers within 6 months.Unfortunately, none of these commitments have been fulfilled:1. *** has not conducted any outreach.2. *** has not made even one meaningful connection on my behalf. Despite claims of having helped thousands secure new positions, this has not been my experience. Both ***** ********* (current CEO) and Waffles ******* (former CEO) have acknowledged my concerns during conversations, agreeing with my point of view.3. While TBG revised my LinkedIn profile and resume and provided guidance on ******** searches, these efforts have not yielded any results. After 8 months, I have yet to receive a job offer. I have requested a new approach from *** over the past couple of months, but they have been unable to provide one and have stopped responding to my emails.Ideally, I had hoped The Barrett Group would assist me in securing a job, but it appears that this is no longer feasible. I trust that *** will recognize the gravity of the situation and address my concerns promptly. I remain hopeful that this matter can be resolved swiftly.

    Business Response

    Date: 03/01/2025

Ajit, we are sorry to hear that The Barrett Group has not met your expectations. Client satisfaction is of paramount importance to us. As part of our goal to deliver superior service, we commit to understanding all concerns and addressing them reasonably. Our program is well-suited for executives with a limited network and limited recent experience in the employment market, like yourself, because the employment market has evolved a lot especially in the past few years. There is a lot to learn about career change best practices and accessing the unpublished market, and part of the value of our program is that we have an ear to the ground on what works and what doesn't. The first several weeks of our program is dedicated to imparting all of that information to clients. As you note, during that time we also help clients rework resumes and LinkedIn profiles and understand how to harness LinkedIn search tools. But the most important component of our program is teaching clients to cultivate and nurture the relationships that can unlock the unpublished market for them. Such relationships cannot be provided; they must be fostered.

Every individual's journey is different, of course. Sometimes it takes longer for a client's efforts to bear fruit. We understand that can be very discouraging. That is why The Barrett Group team is on hand to support clients in their career change efforts every step of the way. But the key word here is effort. Our methodology focuses on teaching clients what to know about career change and how best to make the changes necessary to achieve their goals. The success of our program then hinges on the client putting in the work to execute those lessons. We know it works. Indeed, we have an excellent record 90% of the clients who follow our program land within six to twelve months.

Clients dont always understand the immediate relevance of the tasks assigned to them, but those who remain open to learning and commit to each step find that their dedication unlocks potential within themselves that they didnt know existed. We have been in business for ************************************************************************* landing roles that far exceeded their expectations. We feel confident in the value our program offers clients who follow it faithfully and invest time in doing the tasks assigned to them by their executive career consultants.

    Business Response

    Date: 03/08/2025

We have carefully reviewed the complaint submitted by **** ******* regarding the services provided by The Barrett Group (TBG). Upon thorough examination of all communications and records related to his engagement, we respectfully present the following points to clarify the situation and demonstrate that we have fulfilled all contractual obligations.

    Access to the Unpublished Market

Ajit asserted that The Barrett Group sales consultant promised that *** would help him access the unpublished job market a promise he claims was not fulfilled. However, a review of our communications and service logs confirms that he is incorrect. *** delivered all services outlined in Ajits contractual agreement. Between June 2024 and August 2024, **** met regularly with consultants from our Clarity and ***************** Programs. During this time, all program modules were completed, including comprehensive training on the strategies, tools, and best practices necessary to access the unpublished market effectively.

It is important to note that our records show that **** struggled to apply the program guidance at the onset, requiring significant re-coaching from his career consultant. This additional support underscores our commitment to ensuring that clients understand and apply the methodology correctly as well as the care we take to drive our clients success.

    Outreach to Other Executives

Ajit claims that the *** sales consultant promised that *** would conduct outreach to other executives but did not. However, our records show that our sales consultant explained to **** that effective career change, particularly at the executive level, requires the job seeker to actively build relationships and communicate their own value proposition. Simply outsourcing this critical work to a third party is not an approach The Barrett Group endorses, nor is it one that delivers consistently good results. Based on our experience, it is relationships that most commonly lead to referrals and empower professionals to manage their careers. Our sales consultant was quite clear that the role *** provides is to help clients understand how to expand their own networks, build relationships, and communicate their value proposition.

Additionally, in September 2024, a Barrett Group senior executive met with **** to review his concerns directly. In a gesture of good faith, this executive made very specific additional efforts, thereafter, to connect him with executives in The Barrett Group network. These efforts reflect our commitment to ***** success and our desire to exceed expectations when possible.

    Job Search Results

Ajit claims that the *** sales consultant promised that **** would have multiple job offers within six months a misunderstanding of both our process and commitments. Our contract clearly states that The Barrett Group is a career management consulting firm. Our program is designed to facilitate the securing of a job; we are not a recruiter or a job placement agency.

Our role is to guide and equip clients with the tools, strategies, and insights needed to manage their careers proactively, including identifying and pursuing new opportunities. We do not, and cannot, guarantee job offers or placement outcomes, as hiring decisions ultimately rest with employers. Our services are consultative and collaborative, meaning success depends not only on the quality of our guidance, but also on the clients active participation in applying that guidance.

Ajit stated that after eight months, he has received no job offers. While disappointing, this is not unusual for executive-level transitions, especially for candidates re-entering the job market after a long tenure with one employer. In fact, as we state on our website, most clients who fully engage in our program secure new roles within six to twelve months, which is why our standard program duration is one year.

    Alternative Solutions

Ajit claims that his requests for a new job search approach were ignored and that The Barrett Group has been unresponsive to his emails. However, our records show ongoing engagement with our team and a sustained effort to provide tailored support throughout his program.

For example, **** succeeded in obtaining several interviews after working with The Barrett Group interviews that unfortunately did not lead to job offers. In response, we worked with **** to assess potential obstacles and refine his approach. In October 2024, we recommended and facilitated an intensive interview coaching session, which identified specific areas for improvement in Ajits interview skills.

Between December and ******** Ajit met multiple times with one of our team who specializes in challenging job searches. Together, they discussed new goals for the year and refinements to his overall job search strategy. During this period, **** also worked with a LinkedIn optimization expert to better align his profile with his target roles, highlight his core expertise, and fine-tune his professional narrative to resonate with hiring managers.

Additionally, our research team provided Ajit with custom reports on recruiters that he specifically requested further illustrating our responsiveness to his evolving needs. In total, **** received individualized attention on at least 12 separate occasions above and beyond the core components of our program.

    Communication and Individualized Attention

Ajit complains of a lack of communication. On the contrary, **** records show a consistent and active level of communication, including regular coaching sessions, timely responses to inquiries, and the delivery of resources tailored to his evolving needs. In fact, Ajits case received an elevated level of attention, which we provide when situations require them.

Ajit also claims that he lacked a dedicated liaison. This, too, is inconsistent with our records. **** worked with a dedicated career consultant for several months, benefiting from one-on-one coaching tailored to his background and goals. As Ajits search progressed and additional challenges arose, we expanded his support team, connecting him with specialists in areas such as interview strategy, LinkedIn optimization, and targeted outreach.

At The Barrett Group, we pride ourselves on tailoring our services to each clients unique circumstances, and Ajits experience exemplifies that commitment. Our records clearly demonstrate our responsiveness, flexibility, and willingness to adapt our approach to support his success.

    Conclusion

In summary, The Barrett Group stands firmly behind the methodology we have refined over the past 35 years a methodology that has successfully guided thousands of executives, including those targeting compensation levels exceeding $250K, to fulfilling new career opportunities. While we regret that Ajits experience has not met his expectations, the absence of a job offer does not constitute a breach of contract, nor does it indicate a failure of our program. Ultimately, hiring decisions rest with employers, not with TBG.

Our program is designed for experienced executives and relies on active client participation to achieve success. **** received extensive, personalized support, including multiple coaching sessions, profile optimization, job search strategy development, interview coaching, and tailored research assistance. Throughout his engagement, we fulfilled every contractual obligation and provided even more individualized attention than is standard.

We care deeply about our clients and take pride in their success because their success is our success. We remain confident in the effectiveness of our program and our teams dedication to client outcomes.

Based on the information weve provided, we respectfully request that this complaint be removed from our record, as it misrepresents the nature of our services, the terms of our agreement, and the level of support actually provided to **** *******.

According to the *** contract, if a candidate is dissatisfied with the results, they are entitled to request a new team and approach. I made such a request about six weeks ago during my last conversation with Waffles. He reached out to a few of his colleagues and informed me that ***** ********* had agreed to devise a new approach. However, ***** did not attend the following call, and *** ceased responding to my emails. I explained to ***** ***** that I preferred to explore a new approach rather than filing a complaint with the BBB. Unfortunately, after not receiving any response for over two weeks, my frustration grew, leading me to lodge the complaint. This issue can be resolved in one of two ways: 1. *** provides a new approachperhaps my resume is not aligned with the roles Im applying for. It could be beneficial for *** to consult with a Talent Acquisition executive in the SaaS technology sector to better understand the expectations for resumes in that industry, or to consider a more tailored approach that goes beyond the typical template. 2. TBG refunds my payment.

I was told based on my work history that they would be able to obtain an executive level position making a six figure income.I spent $12,000. I have nothing to show for it. I have been in my industry for 36 years and have owned two businesses. This is a very dishonest and shady company.

    Business Response

    Date: 12/11/2024

We have carefully reviewed the complaint raised by ***** ******* regarding the services provided by The Barrett Group. Upon thorough examination of all communications and records related to his engagement with us, we respectfully present the following points to clarify the situation and demonstrate that all contractual obligations have been met.

    Payment and Services Rendered
***** ******* paid a total of $9,000 for our ***************** Program, as per the signed agreement (see attachment). This payment was made upfront, which was in line with the contract terms. The contract, signed on September 4, 2022, clearly outlined a one-year service period for a fee of $10,000 (or $9,000 if paid upfront). Contrary to his statement, ***** did not pay $12,000, but rather the agreed-upon $9,000. Our records and the attached Services Delivered log clearly demonstrate that all services agreed upon in the contract were provided in full, including resume and ******** profile development, market assessments, interview preparation, and career planning.

    Contractual Terms and Service Duration
The contract explicitly outlined a one-year service period. However, it is important to note that The Barrett Group continued to provide services to ***** well beyond the contractual period, as shown in our service logs. This continuation of services demonstrates our commitment to supporting ****** career goals well past the agreed-upon timeline, further underscoring our dedication to fulfilling our obligations.

    No Guarantee of Employment
***** claims he was promised an executive-level position with a six-figure salary. However, a review of all communication with ***** reveals no such promise. The contract clearly states that The Barrett Group is a consulting firm, not a job placement agency. As such, no guarantees regarding specific job placements or salary outcomes were made. Our role is to assist clients with career development, and we provided all agreed-upon services to help ***** achieve his career objectives.

    Allegations of Insufficient Value
***** states that he has nothing to show for his $9,000 investment. However, this claim is inaccurate and does not reflect the comprehensive services delivered. The Services Delivered log includes detailed records of work completed on ******* behalf, including extensive consultation, resume optimization, LinkedIn profile updates, and interview preparation. These are tangible, valuable services that were provided throughout the engagement.

    Client Engagement and Responsibility
****** desired settlement is to finish the job. However, as stated in the contract, our services are consultative and collaborative, requiring active participation from the client in implementing the guidance and strategies we provide. Unfortunately, our records show that ***** ceased to engage in the process, which limited further progress. The Barrett Group fulfilled its responsibilities, but successful career transition requires active participation from the client, which was not consistently provided.

    Conclusion
Based on the information available, we believe that The Barrett Group has fully honored the terms of the contract with ***** *******. All agreed-upon services were delivered, including additional support beyond the initial contract period. ****** lack of engagement toward the end of the program was a key factor in his perceived lack of progress. Therefore, we respectfully request that this complaint be removed from our record, as it does not accurately reflect the services provided or the terms of our agreement.

I am writing to express my profound disappointment and concern regarding my experience with the Barrett Group. Unfortunately, my encounter with your organization has left me feeling manipulated and taken advantage of during a time of duress and uncertainty. On December 19, 2023, I made a payment of $9,000 to the Barrett Group, LLC, with the intention of seeking the assistance in obtaining employment (invoice number 6169). Like others, I was enticed by the Barrett Group's promise of guaranteeing multiple job offers within a span of 3-6 months, with an average starting salary of approximately $177,000. It was emphasized that the expenses incurred through your services could be easily recuperated through sign-on bonuses. I find myself entering the fifth month of the program without a single interview. This is in ***** contrast to what the recruiter initially promised, as she assured me that I would have secured a six-figure career by this point. The Barrett Group made revisions to my LinkedIn profile and resume, and I engaged in weekly meetings with my assigned coach, who demonstrated various search techniques. Regrettably, these efforts yielded no tangible outcomes. In fact, I find myself in an even more precarious position than before, as I remain unemployed and $9,000 poorer.I have conveyed my disappointment and concerns to my coach, who has been kind and empathetic. However, it is important to note that prior to joining the Barrett Group, I had explicitly expressed the unique nature of my situation. I was assured that this would pose no challenge for the Barrett Group and their extensive reach.Given the circumstances described above, I am formally requesting a refund of the $9,000 I paid to the Barrett Group. I trust that the Barrett Group will acknowledge the gravity of the situation and promptly address my request. I remain hopeful that this matter can be resolved quickly.

Issue: Failure to **************** Services and Refusal to Refund Details:I, ********, am writing to file a formal complaint against The Barrett Group for their failure to deliver the services as promised and their refusal to provide a refund for the unutilized services. Background:I entered into an agreement with The Barrett Group based on the assurances given by their representative, *******, during our initial discussions. ******* led me to believe that their services would meet specific expectations, and he explicitly promised access to the untapped job market. This conversation was held over the phone and was recorded.Breach of Agreement:To my dismay, the service provided by The Barrett Group significantly deviated from what ******* conveyed to me over the phone. This isn't just about a shift in my personal preferences or needs; it's a clear case of the promised service not matching what was delivered. I feel deceived, and I view this as deceptive business practices. As it stands, only 20% of the total service has been completed, yet I paid $12,750 for the full service.Unfair Retention of Payment:Despite only a fraction of the service being provided, The Barrett Group has retained the full payment. This is not only unfair but also reflects poorly on their business ethics and integrity. I had entered this agreement in good faith, and I believe that the onus is on The Barrett Group to rectify this situation.Request for Refund:I have communicated with ***** from The Barrett Group and reiterated my request for a full refund for the services that have not been utilized. I consider this request to be fair and in line with maintaining trust and integrity in business dealings. However, my concerns and requests seem to be taken lightly, and I have yet to receive a satisfactory response. It's been two weeks a no communication from the organization. They don't answer phone calls.

On or about October 17, 2022, I paid the Barrett Group, LLC, the sum of $9,000.00 to help with my career change. The Receipt number for this transaction was 1014-8391. The Barrett Group stated that they would guarantee within 6 months to a year that through their program, methods, and network they would find me a high paying job preferably remote, but would move to the right opportunity. I heard from numerous employees that not only would I receive an offer, but I would have numerous options and was a "catch" so I could impose a bidding war amongst potential employers. Through their training portion, The Barrett Group explained how to use LinkedIn to network, Reworked my Linkedin Profile and rewrote my resume. My coach told me to network with LinkedIn connections to find a new job. All of my quality connections or references were in the same field, and I had explained that prior to working with The Barrett Group, I had exhausted most of those contacts. I devoted most of my time outside of running my own law practice to reviewing job postings and applying for numerous jobs per week. The jobs I applied for usually did not even ****** a response, resulting in the same treatment I had experienced prior to working with The Barrett Group. The Barrett Group sent out one email blast to recruiters that resulted in nothing but "this is not my field," or "I do not have anything available, but will keep your resume in my system." I expressed my dissatisfaction with my coach and asked them to send out another blast, renew my job search campaign, or do anything they can to fulfill their promise of finding me a high paying job that was remote. It has now been over 60 days with no response. I would like my money back because the only reason I sent them money was based on their own guarantee, when I could have worked with other recruitment agencies.

I started searching for a headhunting service in June of 2022. I decided it was time to change my career. I found The Barrett Group (***) in every online search for a headhunter. I joined the *** 6/27/22 at a cost of $9,000. They stated that within 6 months to a year they would help me find a new job. I repeatedly told them that I did not want to find a new job in the same field. *** explained how to use LinkedIn to network, this is something that was covered in a few classes back in college and rewrote my resume. *** told me to network with LinkedIn connections to find a new job. All of my quality connections or references were in the same field, the majority work within the same department as me. I had no connections to fields I was looking to go into. While working full time (***** hrs) and looking for a job outside of my current field I had limited free time. In my spare time I reviewed job postings and applied for about 3 to 5 jobs per week. The jobs I applied for resulted in a lot of feedback that the job position was no longer available or had been removed. *** sent out one email blast to recruiters that resulted in nothing. I expressed my dissatisfaction with multiple *** employees and asked them to refund my money because I was having no luck in finding a new job outside of my current field using the *** program. They offered me a $1,000 refund with a signed release. I requested that *** give me a $7,000 refund with the signed release. *** has not responded to my request.

We are working with the client to resolve this complaint.

To respond in more general terms, The Barrett Group specializes in career management. One of the secrets of our success is that we teach clients how to access the unpublished market [************************************************************************************************] effectively where their chances of landing their targeted position are seven times higher than if they work only with an executive recruiter or five times higher than if they only answer published ads.  Clients who follow our process access all three of these markets and have been therefore typically fielding high quality executive offers and/or interviews in 3 to 6 months over the last few years.
