Horry County Fire Rescue continues to send me invoices and threatening further collection activity. I was taken by ambulance a couple of years ago to a local hospital and notified Veterans Affairs of this within a 72-hour period. The *********************** requires hospitals and other services (such as ambulance) to file their paperwork to the VA within a specified period as well. However, Horry County Fire Rescue waited almost two-years before filing a claim for the ambulance service - therefore, the VA denied their claim because it was filed outside of the allowed time limit, which is federal law. Horry County Fire Rescue continues to bother me for the payment - even after I have told them via phone (twice), and once via letter to cease and desist. They are fully aware that they have to communicate with the *********************** if they disagree with their decision, I have nothing to do with that. I am a 100% disabled combat veteran and do not deal well with this stress, especially this debt that I am legally not responsible for. The VA can attest to what I am writing and verify that they denied the claim for Horry County Fire Rescue because waited so long to file for reimbursement. I do not appreciate Horry County Fire Rescue being rude and threatening me with collection and credit bureau action. They need to stop.

    Business Response

    Date: 05/05/2023

    Hello, ***********************:
Thank you for forwarding to ** this unfortunate complaint that was filed with the Better Business Bureau, and giving us the opportunity to respond.
We would like to begin by saying that we are sympathetic to the concerns raised by ****************, but as stewards of the public trust, we have little discretion in how we are able to deal with his issues. We are not a for-profit business, which is usually the type of enterprise complained of to better business bureaus. The services we provide are public services, the cost of which we seek to recover from recipients of those services, costs which otherwise would be borne by members of the general public, and represent public funds under our charge.
HCFRs billing on transportation and care rendered is handled by a third-party company that has been in frequent and documented correspondence with the ********** of ******** Affairs on this matter. While the transportation and care rendered on this specific call was carried out by HCFR personnel and resources, the billing matters are handled solely by the billing company. They were in contact with the ********** of ******* Affairs eight times regarding this bill, starting within 60 days of **************** transport, ultimately with no successful conclusion to the bill.
Horry County Fire Rescue (HCFR) is recognized as a high-functioning,state-leading, non-profit government agency that provides a high level of pre-hospital care to all of the patients with whom we work. HCFR takes complaints and the responsibility to care for the citizens and guests of Horry County very seriously. We especially respect and appreciate the work of those in the armed services, with many veterans making up our own ranks.
HCFR has hit every **** and standard we hold ourselves to in regard to patient care and correspondences that follow on this specific call.
We are here to help however we can with the tools we have available to us.
Thanks for your time, and again, we hope for a peaceful resolution of this situation with *****************

I am rejecting this response because: as noted in my complaint, I am again asking they stop contacting me via mail and phone. This matter is between *********************** and HCFR.

    Sincerely,

On 08/26/2021 I was vacationing in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and EMS was called to our Resort because my blood sugar dropped to 24 so my husband called 911 and they were dispatched when they arrived I was given a glucose shot and an IV and was able to my blood sugar back within normal range and NO TRANSPORT was necessary, however I received a bill from Horry County for $200 I asked them to submit the claim to my Insurance Provider Care first Blue choice who denied the claim because my policy indicated that their was NO PATIENT RESPONSIBILITY meaning that Horry County would have to some sort of waiver or write off but they continue to bill me and I received the 10th letter on 08/26/2022 but this is their final attempt before adding this to MY CREDIT REPORT and if they do I'm prepared to go legal and SUE Horry County as this has been explained several times by The Provider and my self they were even sent the documentation from Care First stating ZERO Patient Responsibility but I'm now being threatened that this will go to my credit report and I'm currently in the process of being pre qualified to purchase my first home. I'm asking you to help me resolve this and would like to be additionally compensated for harassment as my high blood pressure is affected each time I receive these letters!
