On 8/18/2022 (run # **********) I unfortunately had to be taken to the local ER to an ongoing medical condition that was debilitating enough to where I could not go on my own or via my spouse. We called 911 and the Greenwood EMS arrived in the early morning hours around 3am. They loaded me in the ambulance, made sure i was stable and then transported me to ***** ****** Hospital ER where I had surgery that morning. I actually received number bills for 2 ER/Hospital and Out Patient Procedures within a week or 10 days. But when I received the EMS, it was for $1266.60, which included 1071.00$ for the transport and $195.60 for the 11 mile mileage fee. It was submitted to my insurance and they paid $654.20 but left me owing $612.40. Turns out that was not a contractual agreement adjustment, it was my amount due. I called my insurance and they stated that Greenwood EMS has no contract and they are not a participating provider with my or anyone else's insurance company. So the balance is left as my responsibility unless they agree to adjust it. I called Greenwood and told them what I found out and they stated, this was my responsibility, even though we were not aware that they did not have an agreement nor participated with our insurance company, they were not willing to take the payment as payment in full nor willing to reduce the balance. We just moved to Greenwood and this was a huge surprise to find out that the only EMS provider in town was non par with any insurance companies. I did write a letter of grievance and dispute to them but found out today that they are standing by their policy and are not willing to accept payment in full nor discount the balance. Based on my insurance policy and all the other bills from the services I had to obtain, I actually wouldn't owe anything on this. The crew did a great job, don't get me wrong but I feel that this being a surprise billing, I ask that they accept payment from my insurance company as payment in full.

    Business Response

    Ms. R*****,
It was explained to Mr. ***** by our billing agency that we do not participate with any insurance companies; he has not been singled out. This has always been our practice and is not a new policy. Mr. ***** asked that we write his balance off, as it would have been done in Virginia, where he moved to SC from. We cannot write his bill off. If we did so for him, we would have to do so for all patients whose insurance does not pay in full. We simply cannot do this, as we rely on revenue to continue operations.
Mr. ***** also filed this complaint with another agency, and that complaint was answered exactly as this one.
Mr. ***** is welcome to pay monthly and is not expected to pay this balance in full immediately.
Please let me know if I may be of further service.

    Thank you,
