This past school year I was a student at Clemson University living with 3 other roommates at The Pier at Clemson. After the end of the school year, I cleaned my room in the apartment and moved out according to the move out procedure. On August 4th after I moved out, the management at The Pier completed an inspection of our unit and charged my roommates and I for several damages. They sent a final statement with the charges on August 26th and quickly threatened to send the charges to collections. After emailing them about the issue they sent pictures of all the "damages" they found. These "damages" included impressions in the carpet where furniture had been sitting, push pin holes in the wall, and some faint marks on the wall. All the pictures they sent are attached. For these "damages", my roommates and I were charged for repainting entire walls and for a carpet clean. I can't imagine that most of these "damages" pictured could be considered beyond normal wear and tear. I have looked through the lease that I signed with them and did not see any additions specifying what was considered damage vs normal wear and tear. I did find however that push pins were encouraged in the lease for hanging posters so it is shocking that I am now being charged for it. Additionally, in our individual disputes with the management at The Pier, my roommates and I have received different responses regarding "damages" to the common area which we share. In communication with my roommate, they agreed that the "damages" to the common area were not excessive, and they promised to remove that charge from his bill. Meanwhile I submitted the same complaint and they refused to remove it standing by their original assessment. Many of the other students in the community were also heavily charged for damage and have felt taken advantage of as well.

I can also provide a copy of my email communication with The Pier if needed.
