I took my vehicle to King Street Auto on 06/13/2022.
On 08/03/2022 they called to say it was finished. During this call he explained there were two new codes showing catylitic converter and timing chain. They could not fix it and it would have to be done at a Ford Garage. I asked if it was drivable or would need a tow and he said it was it was safe to drive. Again before I hung up I asked him if it was ok to drive and he said it was. I picked up my car on 08-05-2022 at a cost of $2200. I started the car and a large black cloud of smoke came out. He came to the car and told me it was just oil burning off caused by the previous issue and it shouldn’t continue. I left the shop and approximately 5-10 miles after I left my engine seized up. I was stuck on the side of the interstate it was 104°. I had to leave my car on the interstate and have someone come get me. They later came and pulled it back to their shop. It was a Friday. The following week I never heard from them. I finally called them the following Monday and initially it was like they didn’t even know who I was, then explained they had not looked at it yet. The following week I still heard nothing. I call them and they explained the engine was seized and I would need a new one. When telling me this they told me it was my fault and the oil in it was “old” (they claimed to have changed the oil and charged me during the initial repair of a turbo. However it was changed every time the change oil light came on. I was told by an outside party engine most likely seized as a result of the timing chain issue that he spoke of after the repair. I told them I still owed money on it, so I needed to fix it. After a few weeks They said they couldn’t find an engine and would keep looking. I had it moved to a different shop who also confirmed the engine was seized and is quoting 9,600 to replace it. I am asking for compensation for the engine replacement as well at the $2200 I paid them the day I picked it up.

The vehicle in question was brought to us for a noise coming from the engine area. Customer stated that the issue started in Rapid City and that she drove the vehicle home to Winner, which is around 200 miles away. When we first checked out the noise we found it to be coming from the turbo. We replaced the turbo and changed the oil which was very low and very dirty. The noise was gone and vehicle ran fine. The engine light came on and had codes for timing issues and converter codes. Our shop does not have tools to repair the timing issues on fords and would have to go to a ford dealer. When she came to pick up vehicle the motor locked up shortly after. The issue with the motor was from driving the vehicle with the turbo out that sucked the engine oil out of the motor which caused internal issue that we could not have seen without tearing down the motor. We offered to replace motor at a reduced cost but said it would take a while to get back in. She then took the vehicle to another repair facility. If we had been able to know the internal damage to the motor we would not have let her take it. It is our belief that driving the distance she did with the broken turbo sucked the engine oil out and into the exhaust causing the black smoke and the internal issues with the motor.

I would also like to reiterate that us replacing the turbo has nothing to do with why the motor went out.

    Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:

At no point during the drive from Rapid City to Winner did a low oil or change oil light appear. Although the vehicle was displaying mechanical issues, the noise did not start until after returning home and from that point forward the vehicle was towed from point a to point b. To clarify, the issue is not with the repair, the issue is at the advice of the mechanic the vehicle was driven home and not towed home as it should have been.  Despite there being timing issues it was cleared to drive home. I clarified on more than one occasion it was safe to drive rather than tow and the answer was yes, it could be driven. Had the vehicle been towed home a complete engine failure could have been prevented. At no time was I told a discounted engine replacement would happen nor did it appear it was any concern the engine failed less then 20 mins of leaving the shop. At no point was I offered my money back; however, a third party was told the money was being held for a refund which leads me to believe the intention was to appear as though there would be some sort of reimbursement but not actual intention to accept any fault.

    Sincerely,

WE UBDERSTAND YOUR FRUSTRATIONS WITH THE MOTOR GOING OUT AFTER THE REPAIRS. WE DROVE VEHICLE AFTER OUR REPAIRS AND IT RAN FINE OTHER THAN THE LIGHT CAME ON, WE CAN NOT PREDICT THE FUTURE OF WHEN A MOTOR WILL FAIL. ALL WE COULD GO BY WAS HOW IT ACTED WHEN WE DROVE IT. THERE IS ALSO NO PROOF OF WHAT ACTUALLY BROKE IN THE MOTOR. WE WILL NOT BE REIMBURSING ANY MONEY FOR THE REPAIRS WE DID BECAUSE WE DID FIX THE TURBO AND ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGE TO THE MOTOR.
