GMC Customer Assistance Center

I am writing to you regarding one of your authorized dealers who refused
to repair a known defect under warranty.
I purchased my 2023 GMC Canyon, Vin# ****************** from
**** **** in Mitchell,South Dakota in December of 2023.
On April 11 2025, I brought my truck in for service. I wanted the oil
changed, the tires rotated, and I wanted an issue I was having with the
rear window repaired. Now, this issue is intermittent. Sometimes the
window will go down, but will not come back up. The only way I can get
the window back up, is to pull over to the side of the road, shut the truck
off, restart it, and then the window comes back up.
When I scheduled the appointment with Vern Eide, I specifically told
them there was a bulletin issued by GMC about this issue. It was issued
in December of 2023 and is enclosed with this letter. It describes the
problem I'm having exactly.
When I arrived at their facility, I specifically asked the girl to look up the
bulletin and replace the defective part. I reiterated it was an intermittent
problem. A little over an hour later, I noticed my truck was finished, so I
asked about the window. She told me they were unable to replicate the
problem and that they couldn't replace the switch.
That's when I asked to speak to the service manager. A young lady
came out, I don't recall her name, and basically repeated what the first
girl said. Because they didn't actually see it happen, they couldn't
replace the switch. I asked, even though it's a known defect? She said
the problem was, if it didn't give some kind of computer code, then GMC
wouldn't pay them for the repair. So I asked again, even though it's a
known defect? She confirmed yes, they would not be paid if they couldn't
prove it.
I'll admit, it was probably the most polite way I've ever been called a liar,
but that's what it boils down to. Vern Edie would not perform the warranty
repair, a known defect, because they couldn't confirm I was telling the
truth.
I tried to explain I live over 50 miles away, and I can't drive back and
forth, hoping it acts up one day while I'm there.
It didn't matter how many times I repeated it's a known defect, she would
not perform the repair. so I left the dealership.
Now I'm reaching out to you, the manufacturer, to resolve this issue. I
fully expect the part to be replaced under the terms of the warranty. If
you decline to do so, I will take it to the repair shop of my choice and
have the switch replaced at my expense. Then, I will file a lawsuit in
small claims court against Vern Edie for failure to honor a warranty. I
believe I have standing as they are your authorized agent. I believe
along with the bulletin, I'll win my case. However, it's only fair to tell you
that any such lawsuit will include lost time and mileage.
Last, I am not taking my truck back to Vern Edie. I expect to have the
warranty work done at Olympic Chevrolet Buick GMC in Huron.
Please arrange for this to happen. I’ll wait 30 days. If the repair isn’t
completed by then, I’ll take it to a local shop and settle up with Vern Edie
after it's done.

There's a known issue with the 2023 GMC Canyon, particularly regarding the
window switches not working properly. GM issued a tech bulletin in December
2023. The problem is with the window switches themselves, and a specifc
date range of affected vehicles exists. This can cause the windows to not roll
up and may also affect the blind spot monitor.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
? Tech Bulletin: GM has issued a tech bulletin regarding this issue, indicating that
the window switches are faulty.
?
? Affected Vehicles: The issue impacts a specifc date range of 2023 Canyon
models.
?
? Symptoms: The primary symptom is the window not going up, and this may also
affect the blind spot monitor.
?
? Fix: The recommended solution is to replace the faulty window switches.
?
? Potential Temporary Fix: If you are experiencing this issue, you can try holding
the switch in the "up" position for 10 seconds, then in the "down" position for 10
seconds, and then try "up" again to see if that resets any computer-related
malfunction.Business Response

We bought a brand new 2024 Chevrolet Equinox in August 2023. We noticed a smell that came out of the vents when the ac was used so we went and they cleaned the system with the ozone and they charged us for it. It got cold, so we didn't use the ac again until this summer and that smell still came out of the vents in waves. We took it back to the dealership and they charged us again for the ozone treatment. A day later, the smell was still there. We called and told them it was syill an issue and that ever since we bought the car from the lot it has been a problem. They told us its not covered under warranty and that we could pay for a diagnostic but it wouldnt be covered under warranty. I called GMC and they said the same thing. My complaint is we bought a new car that I will have to pay for to be diagnosed and it was supposdd to be new with no defects. I feel like this shouldnt happen when you pay for a new car.Business Response

I received the better business bureau complaint. I reviewed their visits. We followed a bulletin that directed us to replace a cabin filter and perform a deodorizing treatment. When I received the better business complaint I called the customer to go over our repairs so far, and to let them know I'd reach out to General Motors on their behalf to see if there was a different method of repair, or if there wasn't different method, if GM would offer some goodwill. At the end of my call to the customer they informed they were going to seek help from a different source other than Vern Eide. They called back shortly after the original call ended and confirmed they were no longer going to seek assistance through **** ****. I did email my district service representative on 11/27/24 following my call with the customer. I gave him the information so that if the customer made contact with general motors they would know a brief history. I'd be happy to facilitate the contact between GM and the customer if the customer would like.Initial Complaint

Vehicle broke down in Mitchell, took it to GMC verne eide. Codes read on the car ****** ****** *****. Told I needed to have my Engine control module replaced despite it already being replaced a year ago. I questioned repeatedly if this would actually fix the issue because it obviously had not in the past. I was reassured this was the cause and made to order a part for hundreds of dollars. My final bill was $902.77 for this fix and an oil change. I picked up my vehicle and drove approximately 1 hour before the issue reoccurred. I immediately called verne eide GMC and told them my car broke down again. When I took it back to them, they said the same three codes popped up on the vehicle and now I would need to pay further for them to fix it. I already paid to have this issue fixed, they did not do the work to actually fix my problem and now want more money to put different parts in my vehicle that are costly and time consuming.Business Response

Customer originally came in on 6/21/23 and requested we reprogram their pedal position sensor. So we did per customer request. Customer came in 7/19/24 with a check engine light on, presenting certain codes. Our technician scanned the vehicle and then followed the Diagnostic Instructions for those codes. I have attached the diagnostic instruction. The diagnostic led to replacing the Engine Control Module, which we did. The diagnostic procedure was followed exactly as presented. We replaced the part that the code based diagnostic system told us was at fault. That problem would have to have been ruled out before any further diagnostics could be preformed. It appears the customer has had the vehicle worked on either on their own, or in other shops multiple times as stated on the last RO. It seems we are inheriting an issue unresolved either during the customers attempts to repair or another shop. In review of this case, our team followed process and procedure as outlined in attachments. We did not charge the customer for the diagnostic work on the last RO.Initial Complaint

Tim from Vern Eide GM in ******** called me at 7:31am on 3/24/23. I stated before I come and look at a vehicle that I was interested in I wanted to be sure I would be able to be financed for a vehicle over 100,000 miles which often times banks do not approve or shy away from it and I also explained my personal situation. I also sent him a follow up text. I reinterated that my question is financing the truck with the mileage. He didn't follow back up with me as he stated he would on the phone. I sent him a second text asking him what the Finance dept said about getting me financed for that truck for over 100,000 miles. I asked him what the Finance dept said. Tim's repsonse was "That we can finance it for you no issues", "Do you want to put a depo on it then come in do paperwork next week". Tim guaranteed me via text message that I would be approved for the truck ---- I contacted another employee at Vern Eide GM in ********. I stated I was curious as to the apr and financing terms. My credit was ran as a hard credit check without my approval. This person apologized for checking it as well as said it was a misunderstanding. This is not ok to be guaranteed approval from the finance dept (I went into my situation with him on the phone) - then to not be approved and have my credit ran as a hard pull without my permission,Business Response

The customer submitted a credit application before we ever engaged him. The customer even asked what's my rate. The credit application results in getting your credit pulled. The customer makes mention in his texts "Not for that truck cuz of the miles." That is what the salesman though when he asked if we could finance it. It is common for a customer to ask us if we can finance a older or higher mileage vehicle when they inquire, because a lot of banks will not. The salesman was assuming the customer was asking if we could finance "that truck." That truck falls within the guidelines of something we could finance.
