Bought a 2012 VW Bug on 3/14/25 from Law motors in Sioux Falls, SD for $8700.00. I test drove the vehicle, I asked if it had any mechanical issues. They said it did, but their in-house mechanic fixed them. Bought the vehicle, I live a hour away I get on the interstate the check engine light comes on. I start losing speed quickly and engine shuts off. I get the vehicle home take it to my mechanic they do a quick check on the codes they come back as knock sensor and system too lean. Call up Law motors ***** ****** says to bring it back (how can I when the vehicle doesn't drive) take it to the mechanic to get the crankshaft position sensor replaced. Find more problems with the vehicle. Buy more parts from Graham automotive to fix the vehicle so it runs. The car still won't run after installing the new parts. Now instead of being $8700 in debt I'm now $10,516.09 in debt with a vehicle I bought used for 2 hours and broke. I understand there is a no lemon law in South Dakota, but how they represented the sale of this vehicle and lied to me when I asked if there were any mechanical issues I feel I was misrepresented and taken advantage of as a woman

    Business Response

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to this customer’s concerns.

At Law Motors, we strive to be transparent and fair in every vehicle transaction. The customer purchased a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle from us on March 14, 2025. At the time of sale, the vehicle was in good running and driving condition, having undergone a mechanical inspection by our in-house technician. Any prior issues had been addressed prior to the vehicle being offered for sale. The customer test drove the vehicle, and the sale was completed “as-is” without a service contract, which was offered and declined.

Later that day, the customer contacted me to report that the check engine light came on after they had left and that the vehicle had lost power. I expressed concern and immediately invited them to return the vehicle so our technician could inspect it and assist. However, I did not hear from them again until May 2, 2025—approximately seven weeks later—at which point they informed me they had taken the vehicle to another mechanic, purchased multiple parts, and were now being advised that the vehicle requires additional work.

Because the vehicle was never returned to us for inspection or repair, and because other parties performed mechanical work during that time without our knowledge or approval, we were removed from the opportunity to inspect the situation firsthand, assess the vehicle, or potentially resolve the concern early. While I empathize with their frustration, especially regarding unexpected vehicle repairs, our dealership cannot be held responsible for costs incurred by third-party repairs, or for mechanical changes or diagnoses made without our involvement.

To be clear, we did not misrepresent the vehicle. It was test-driven, sold as-is, and purchased with the understanding that no warranty coverage was included. Had the vehicle been returned immediately as requested, we would have honored our commitment to look into the concern in good faith.

    Respectfully,
    ***** ******
