On 17 Jan 2023 I was scheduled for an appointment at Horizon Gastroenterology/Nrlgy at 8:00am. A company representative that was working in the receptionist area stated they will take my copay of $50.00. I stated to them that I have another appointment on Monday 23 Jan 2023 may I pay them both when I come in as I just payed for an MRI on 12 jan 2023 in the sum of $374.00. The company representative stated to me that they needed payment or the test would not happen as I was surprised and I stated are you ******** me. The company representative stated are you not going to talk to me like that walked away from the service window spoke with and coworker to what I could not hear. Company representative returned told me leave and threatened to call the cops on me and informed me they were going to let *******************************, MD know what transpired.

The patients insurance determines copayments and deductibles and often print them on the patient's insurance card for patient knowledge. Medical practices are obligated by the law to collect these payments during service. This is mentioned in office policies and practices which the patients review and sign at the time of the first evaluation. The notice is also posted on the front desk check-in window. Waiving the patients insurance responsibility violates the contract between medical practice and private insurance company plans and can result in legal accountability for the practice. The company representative complied with the law by asking for the copayment. As our goal is to take care of our patients in the best possible manner, we have reviewed the incident with our staff members and provided appropriate feedback. Thank you for informing us of the patient's viewpoint.
