I have encountered what I believe to be a scam at a local bar and night club. On Saturday, July 13, 2024, Bar Watson charged myself and my friend a 20% service charge for closing our tab after 10pm. When I asked about this I was directed to three different people until I found the "bar manager" who informed me this is just common practice in Chattanooga. I told her I thought it should have to be posted. She told me it's in your receipt. I was never shown or given a receipt, and had to ask the bartender to print one. I was verbally told my total. My friend was also charged a 3% card fee but was not told she was going to be charged. She saw this after she asked for a receipt as well. Not only this, but I was verbally told my tab is $31, but the receipt shows it to be $30.69 meaning they're rounding up if you pay with cash, and stealing the change from customers. I paid with $40 and got $9 back, not $9.31 as would have been accurate. There is no placard or signage that says tabs closed after 10pm get a service charge. We had actually stopped ordering drinks after 8pm but were staying for a karaoke competition. The waiter quit coming around to fill our waters or sodas, and we had to go up to the bar when we left to tab out. If we had known there was a fee to simply have a tab open after 10pm we would have closed our tab after each drink ordered. The bottom line is, there is no signage for the service fee, there is no signage for the credit card fee, and correct change is not being given. And I was told all three of these are common practice and I should expect it in any bar in Chattanooga. That can't be legal, can it?
