I purchased gift certificates to the Ice Cream Show in denominations of $10 for a total of 10 cards and $5 for a total of 4 cards. I also gave 3 people that I did not know was coming cash of $10 each. The card clearly states the denomination on them. The ones that used the gift cards purchased hot chocolate or coffee and said the bill was about $6. They took the entire gift certificate amount as payment, did not reimburse payment and then demanded 18% tip. So effectively I paid $10 plus tip for a $6 cup of coffee. (total with tip about $ 12 per cup). The person's that I gave cash to got their change back. Since gift certificates are considered cash equivalents by the IRS, I feel that they should have been given the balance back. I have reached out to the owner 3 times. She called back once, I was on another call but promptly called back and was sent to voicemail. I have left a message with the actual restaurant and have left 2 other voicemails telling the owner that I was available after 5 any time for three consecutive days and never got a return call. I would like assistance getting the portion of the money that should have been reimbursed to my wedding guests, which comes to about $40 of the $120 I spent. I would have gladly let them take the remaining amount of the gift cards had they not also mandated a tip. I feel that this is poor business practice and downright theft.
