To whom it may concern, I want to first introduce myself. My name is ***************************** and I was hired Feb 26 at the Columbia, ** location. I absolutely love this company and I loved my job. It was actually my most favorite job and I loved the environment. I felt like this was a career I could stick with and enjoy going to work. As well as grow with. I really enjoyed it. Until, I began to work for *****************************. Since day 1 she has been on my back about everything. Not even giving me the time to learn everything. She was constantly nitpicking at me, micro managing to the point we felt like children and expects us to immediately know everything by her saying something or showing us one time. If I asked a question about something that I didnt understand she says I already told you that or Im going to let you figure that out on your own but telling and teaching are two totally different things and obviously if I am asking for more clarification, it should be met with the willingness to teach and help that employee become better at her job. She should have been explaining it thoroughly on something I had only done maybe one time before. I asked questions so that I understood what is expected of me. I was still learning and I ask questions to be good at my job. Thats how a good manager makes a good team. Not belittling someone. Its a team effort and it felt like we were then I dont know, something flipped in ****** to the point where I felt like I was being set up for failure. I felt like I was messing everything up even when I shouldve felt proud of myself for learning something new. I never felt with ****** that the good would ever outshine the awful image that she had of me all over makeup? How is that okay? No one should be hired on their appearance only and should be determined on what the person brings to the table. Its very insulting to have someone down your appearance. That is something that sticks with a person. And of course I am going to have questions. I had just started. But her expectations were unreasonable and she was constantly on me so much so that even ***** noticed it. She was this way towards me more so than ***** though and I dont know why she has such an issue with me. She makes me feel stupid, talks to us like we are children and I am far from being a child and even more so far from being stupid. Things she would fuss at me about had a different set of rules for herself and other employees. One particular occasion I had turned in two days that I needed off. Yes, it was within my 90 days. My daughter is graduating in May and she has a scholarship day the 20th. Those things I cannot and will not miss. She even stated that Id have to come and then leave which is fine. I agreed to do that but once a time was discussed on when I needed to leave by she stated that she needed me there longer than the time I needed to leave. I live 40 minutes away and have an hour drive to my daughters school. She did not care that my daughter was graduating and wanted me to come to work and leave at the latest possible. THIS IS MY DAUGHTERS GRADUATION and she gave me c*** for needing those times off. Would she miss her childrens graduation? Absolutely not but I was expected to. So theres one major line she crossed there. She also stated that we would have 1 late night and it fell on Thursdays. Okay cool, no big deal. Then it became Wednesday and Thursday nights and in the interview ***** and myself were never told there was to be a Saturday at the end of the month. Which was okay with me as well. Never complained. Theres a lot more that I could share but my main concern is her speaking on my appearance. Last week I was running a 101 temp and still came to work. Thursday and Friday I was throwing up most of the day at work especially on Thursday, so I have not felt well at all BUT I was still at work on time and there everyday. With no complaints. I came in and did what I was supposed to do. She knew I was sick and a few days after I started she made the comment (because ***** had called out sick) that she comes to work running a fever and not feeling well so no one should miss work from being sick and she even made the comment about how legally she doesnt have to honor a doctors note. That we should be at work regardless, especially since we are in our 90 days probationary period. She also made the comment that if ***** didnt come back that it was fine because she already had us replaced if we left. That makes you want to give your all?! When she found out I had a fever that day she got upset and then told me she cant take anything home to her husband and ****** 7.5 months pregnant so neither of them needed to get sick. Which I agree 100% but with ****** making the comment about she comes in sick is the only reason I came in. I dont believe in calling out or missing work but I still was not sent home. ****** has made several comments towards me but the ones about my appearance were very rude, offensive and disrespectful all because I didnt have makeup on all week because I was sick. I came in dressed up and my hair done but no makeup. It was stated that she hired me for my appearance and not my work ethic or experience. I have an amazing work ethic and I bust my **** at whatever job that I have. Being a manager at every job that I have had, I wouldve never thought to insult any of my employees especially on their appearance. And I managed up to 30 people before. It should be your work ethic, experience, morals, character, friendliness, excellent customer service skills and the ability and want to be polite to customers. It should consist of coming to work and being there even when I was sick. As a manager, the things that she felt were okay to say wouldve insulted anyone. And she sees nothing wrong with speaking on my appearance. I know theres an image to uphold and I could understand her concerns if I was coming in with house shoes and pjs on. But thats not the case at all. I shouldnt be told I have to wear makeup to be presentable. I was told to fix it , that she has shown me ***** since Ive been sick. There was no ***** shown. She has been talking about me needing makeup for 3 days prior to the actual conversation. These were hints from her that I needed makeup and she even admitted that to me. And up until our conversation on Friday, she has made comments in front of another employee and customers. What if makeup is against my religion, or Im allergic to makeup or what if I am not a big makeup girl-which Im not. I let ****** know that I do not wear makeup in the summer. I am very fair skinned and I get really freckly so I have a hard time matching my skin tone. She said that was okay but it wasnt okay for me not to be wearing makeup because I was sick. You dont talk about the way someone looks, especially as a manager. Thats a line she shouldve never crossed. She stated that she expects me to come in to work everyday looking like I did in the interview. Which was strictly mascara. She made the comment that I couldve at least put mascara on. I told her with me being sick I slept a few minutes later than usual. She stated that I shouldve still put on at least that. But You cant force someone to put makeup on. You just cant. Thats a personal choice. It isnt just about being a good manager, its also about being a good person. The things that she has said about what I look like is something that shouldve never come out of her mouth. In a professional setting or outside of work. It was very unprofessional. Managers are supposed to make you the best at your job, motivate you to do better, teach you the things that you needed to succeed but working under ****** has been the worst experience I have ever had with any job. But I also have never had a manager ever say something about my appearance. That is 150% discrimination. There is no respect coming from her at all. I cannot work for someone who highly insulted me and disrespected me not only to my face but in front of people. Customers and employees. It should be an option for that said person and not be forced to wear makeup because it doesnt meet her standards. Tell me Im ugly, without telling me Im ugly and thats pretty much what the whole conversation boiled down to. I reminded her that I have been sick and even received a text from her Tuesday thanking me for sticking it out while being sick. But then the next day rolls around and she started making snide comments about my appearance. I let that go and kept on working. Then Friday she pulled me aside and stated the things Ive listed above. She claimed that she was telling me so I could fix it. How do you fix your face? It was hurtful and anyone in a management position should NEVER insult their employees. *** never once disrespected her and even after the conversation, I remained calm and didnt say anything else. I went back to my desk and started working again trying to keep myself calm and to chalk it up to her being that type of a manager and her being stressed with everything with her mom. After I let it brew a little more, I was getting even more upset about what she had said. And in disbelief that she was okay with belittling someone and trashing their appearance. I stepped outside to calm down which seemed to be a big hindrance for her but I needed that minute to myself to take in what she said and to calm down. I was no good calling customers being as in shock and upset that I was. I felt it was very insulting and inappropriate on how she approached the situation. It wasnt her asking, it was her demanding me to wear makeup because thats what SHE expected. I have been very presentable. I even spent hundreds of dollars to be dressed appropriately but something was wrong all the time. Dont get me wrong, ****** can be great as a person but she is not as a manager. Its hard to have respect for someone who literally just insulted me in the worst way possible. I just lost 157 lbs over 18 months and I started feeling good about myself and I had every right to feel that way, with or without makeup. But from someone who has low self esteem and was finally getting back to feeling good about myself, was a huge thing for me and then to have someone go and destroy all that progress. And make you feel like c*** about yourself is what is unacceptable. One comment was directed towards me not once but twice in front of the other woman working there. The comment was you must really feel bad since you havent worn makeup all week. I told her I did feel awful. This was a Thursday. Friday I didnt wear makeup either but made sure I was presentable. She pulled me to the side Friday afternoon and pretty much told me to fix my face and hair and that she has an image to uphold and my image at the moment did not meet her standards for the company. I am not an ugly girl and I found this to be more than insulting. I wont allow someone to distract me in that way- manager or not. She stated that my appearance was pretty much lacking and I needed to fix that by Monday. She also stated that my hair was greasy in which I had ****** in my hair because I have semi curly hair and it was still wet from where I had taken a shower before work. She has fussed about a few of my outfits not being work appropriate. One being a pair of jeans that had small pearls on them. Not ripped. No tears etc. which is what we were told not to wear. In fact the jeans I had on were dressier than what she had on. I have followed dress code exactly However, there has not been one thing that has been inappropriate as I am a very modest person. I was told that my appearance was unacceptable and I wasnt meeting company standards. Being told I have to wear makeup because my appearance was unacceptable was a slap in the face. My point being is that the unprofessionalism and the harsh words that she chose to say to me were uncalled for. Its very judgmental and rude. I see why her turn over is so bad and why no one really stays with her. She may be a top performing store but she doesn't know how to respect her employees. Dissing someones appearance when thats just how they look is one of the biggest mistakes she could have made. Once I pulled her to the side and explained where I stood and how what she said was hateful she didnt seem to care. She just kept on with as a manager, you have to understand whats acceptable and whats not. If I wasnt preforming my job adequately or I was calling out all the time or if I was wearing something scandalous or even if she had her own issues with me, my appearance should have never been the one thing she fusses at me for. I can handle a lot of things and I typically let things roll off my back but this, I cannot. It is 100% discrimination. It was cruel. And it costs nothing to be kind. I cant help what I look like. This is my face. Point blank period. When I pulled her to the side, I made it very clear that what she had said was hurtful and hateful. She tried to validate the reasons she said what she did but belittling someone doesnt need validation because it was wrong no matter how you looked at it. At the end of the day, I chose to leave. I made that decision and felt it was the best for me. Disrespecting someone and basing that person's capability to perform a job to its fullest (which I always do and have done) is the last thing I expected when I took this job. I had to quit a job that I love because someone decided it was necessary to talk about how I looked. Someone needs to know. I wouldnt have left if the manager had respect for her employees. I know shes been with Sun Credit for 5 years but the way she treated me is not how you build a great team.Business Response
