I responded to a post that ******* ****** of Mathis Builds (Columbia, TN) did in our subdivision's private ******** page about his services he was soliciting for decks and patios. I needed a new patio and stairs. He came to my house to discuss the project and followed up with e-mailing a formal estimate on 4/25/25 that I needed to electronically approve, which I did on 4/26/25. It was an $8,400 job. Only discussion of timing so far was me telling him I wasn't in a big rush so whatever worked in his schedule. I followed up on 5/5/25 asking when it would be scheduled for and he replied, week of 5/19/25. On Friday 5/16/25 at 8 pm (2 days before the start date) he sent a message saying due to weather issues he wouldn't be starting until second half of the week. My full response was "All good on my end". Then today 5/19/25 (original start date and 2 days before rescheduled date) he sent me a message at 6:30 a.m. asking for forgiveness because he had to back out of the job. Didn't offer a new date. The only offer was to forward me a couple of names of other people. After I responded with my frustration about how unprofessional this was he called me. After I told him I planned on sharing my experience on our subdivision's ******** page where I found and him and other places he said he wanted to make a few calls to see if he could make the job work. He called back 10 mins later saying he just couldn't do it. Again, never offered another date in the future. I then went to file a complaint the with Contractor's Board and realized his license had expired. It has been a very unprofessional experience. Full disclosure he never asked for a deposit nor did I make one but it has caused a major inconvenience.

I did provide an estimate which was approved on April 26, 2025. That is correct, and I fully acknowledge that commitment.
It was never my intention to cause any disruption or disappointment. Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances that had become overwhelming, I realized I was not in a position to complete the work as planned in addition to all of my other responsibilities. I take full responsibility for backing out, and I truly apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this caused.
While my contractor's license is currently expired, I have not performed any work exceeding the $25,000 legal limit for unlicensed contractors since April 30, 2025, which is when it expired. I have been careful to stay within legal guidelines. Furthermore, all necessary documentation for my license renewal was submitted on April 1, 2025, and the renewal process has been underway since that date.
I originally communicated that the work would take place during the week of May 19. On Friday, May 16, I informed that the job would need to be pushed back to second half of the week of the 19th. On Monday, the 19th I reached out to let know that I would not be able to do the job due to my circumstances. At that time, I offered to connect him directly with the subcontractors involved, so he could still move forward with the project if he chose to do so.
Unfortunately, the conversation over the phone escalated shortly afterward, I tried to reason about the scenario, but I was met with an ultimatum to do the job for less. While that was not the reason I chose to step away from the project, it did confirm for me that it was not appropriate or constructive to continue further communication.
Again, I regret how this situation unfolded and offer my sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. It was never my intention to mislead or disappoint anyone.
